Assignment 3.1: 2. Sausage Advertisement

The document discusses three advertisements and analyzes their use of multimodality and semiotics. [1] The first ad for hiring confuses viewers by depicting a hanging necktie, misrepresenting the job as stressful. [2] A sausage ad uses disturbing imagery that does not entice eating. [3] A flower shop ad is messy and overwhelming, confusing viewers rather than attracting them. In each case, the inappropriate use of images and text fails to clearly convey the intended message and may negatively impact the business. Proper design is needed to effectively advertise through balanced and aesthetically pleasing multimodal elements.

ASSIGNMENT 3.

1. HIRING ADVERTISEMENT

In this example of advertisement, we can see that the signifier here is the
represented necktie that hangs upside down; the background color of the ad is gray that
makes the ads simpler. It also includes text that stated, “Now Hiring and Join the most
stressful work environment”. Besides, the logo of their company named as “benchmark”;
with a tagline of “think beyond” was also included – which adds to the signifier. The
advertisement wants to signified here is that their company is hiring and they are now
accepting applicants. However, using the
multimodal texts and semiotics here are not
effective in delivering the intended message
of the ad because their advertisement makes
people confused to join and apply in their
company; it looks like the tie represents a
suicidal ambiance that you may think that the
job is so stressful that you will end up hanging
yourself and that shows how semiotic feature
changes the meaning of the intended
message. For us, it is inappropriate to make
advertisement like this because many people
may misinterpret what exactly is being conveyed on the text and it may also affect the
business itself because the people may think it is a bad idea to apply in that kind of
company.

2. SAUSAGE ADVERTISEMENT
In this advertisement the used of multimodality wasn't good and it give confusion
for the audience to easily identify the prior point that the picture is showing of. The
advertisement used an odd shade of green which is not appetizing at all. This is supposed to
entice the viewers to eat a certain brand of French sausage but the image they used is quite
disturbing and cruel. Food advertisement shall
make the viewers to buy and crave for it but
this is the opposite. No one would buy a
sausage after the viewers saw a pig happily
slaughter itself. The wrong use of semiotic and
mutimodality can affect not only the sales but
also the image of the business because people
have different beliefs and culture. This kind of
advertisement maybe fine and normal for
some but it doesn’t apply to all. In addition,
the texts are too closed to the edges. The size
of the image should be adjusted for the text to
have space and not too close to the image. As for suggestion, it is better if they used bright
color like yellow and red to be eye-catching and use appropriate font style and font size to
have a balance with the image.

3. FLOWER SHOP ADVERTISEMENT

The advertisement used a bright and nice color which can attract the attention of
the target customers. However, the words and images are very messily placed and no
alignment which will make readers confused with where they should focus on and will cause
them to lose focus very quickly. It is better if
they used only one image of flower to put in the
advertisement and a minimum of two font
styles for it won’t make the ads too complicated
and overwhelming. The placement of the
images are also too close to edges, causing
unease and tension. The used of wrong
multimodal for the advertisement would affect
the sales. Anyone who saw this advertisement
would rather not read it because this ad is
confusing. Viewers shouldn’t have to work to
get what the ads trying to say. The
advertisement should also make good use of contrast, repetition, color, and pattern. When
this design elements are implemented well into an advertisement, the result will appeal
aesthetically to viewers.
