Experiment no-9
Experiment name: Two stage two bath with disperse/reactive dyes at high temperature.
Theory
when two or more types of fibers are combined together into the one fabric.Blends are created to
improve the feel, performance or durability of the fabric.Blends are any textile materials, from
fibres (filaments) through yarns to fabric which are deliberate combinations of chemically or
physically different fibrous polymers. Under this definition, blends can range from bi-component
fibres, mixtures of different filaments, core spun yarns, uniformly blended staple fibres
throughout fabric and everything which falls betweenIn this experiment polyester and cotton are
blended together. Here the fibers have different affinity to different dye stuff. So the dyeing is
done in 2 steps in 2 different baths. The polyester is dyed by disperse and the cotton is by
reactive dye .
The term disperse dyes have been applied to organic colouring substances, which are free from
ionizing groups, are of low water solubility and are suitable for dyeing hydrophobic textile
materials from colloid dispersion. It is a special class of dyestuff which is used for dyeing man-
made fibres
Reactive dye is a class of dye that makes a covalent bond with the fiber and becomes an integral
part of the fiber. Reactive dyes are so-called because this is the only type of dye that has a
reactive group. This group reacts chemically with the fiber polymer molecules to form covalent
bonds. This covalent bond is formed between the reactive group and terminal –OH group of
cellulosic fibers

Working Procedure:
Recipe of Disperse dyeing

Disperse dye → according to shade

Dispersing agent → 1%
Acetic acid → 3 ml/L
Sequestering agent
M:L → 1:10
Time→ 1hr
Temperature→ 1300C
Procedure of polyester dyeing:
1. The dye and dye auxiliaries are added to the pot according to the recipe.
2. After the chemicals the required water is calculated and added to the pot.
3. The sample is immersed in the solution.
4. The sample is dyed for 1 hr at 130C temperature.
5. After dyeing it is washed and dried.

Conclusion
In this experiment we learned how to dye blended fabric. We went through the process of dyeing
a fabric in two separate baths .Also we observed the results. We learned about the preparation
and dyeing process which will be helpful for our future.
