Reactions Station Lab

Purpose
The purpose of this lab is to write the balanced chemical equation for each reaction, classify the reaction, and
describe indicators that show that a chemical change is occurring.
Materials
 Bunsen burner(s)  Sodium hydroxide (.1M)  Matches
 Striker(s)  Test tube holder  Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
 Crucible tongs  Mossy zinc  Potassium iodide
 Magnesium strips (3-5  Hydrochloric acid solution (concentrated)
cm) (3M/.5M)  Sodium carbonate
 Test tubes  Ethanol  Calcium (solid)
 Copper (II) sulfate (.1M)  Watch glass  Beaker (250 mL)
Procedure
1. Read the station card thoroughly. Pay attention to the safety information!
2. Write the chemical equation in your data table and balance it.
3. Determine the type of reaction (synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, or
combustion) and record in your data table.
4. Complete the reaction as directed by the station card.
5. List the evidence of a chemical change (gas, color change, precipitate, heat/light) in the data table.

Conclusion Questions
1. For the following chemical reaction, circle the reactants and box the products.
CH4 + 2 O2  CO2 + 2 H2O
2. What is the purpose of balancing a chemical equation?

3. How does a chemical change (reaction) differ from a physical change?

4. Define element.
5. Define compound.

6. Define precipitate.

7. If a precipitate is formed during a lab, what visual observations would you make? (What does the
precipitate look like?)

8. A chemical equation has only 1 reactant. What type of chemical reaction would this be?

9. A chemical equation has only 1 product. What type of chemical reaction would this be?

10. A reaction has an element and a compound as reactants. What type of reaction would this be?

11. A reaction has 2 compounds as reactants. What type of reaction would this be?

12. A reaction has a hydrocarbon and oxygen as reactants. What type of reaction would this be?

13. In station 1, the chemical reaction shows the reaction between magnesium and oxygen, but the
directions only tell you to heat the magnesium. Where does the oxygen come from?

14. In station 7, you observed bubbles being formed during the reaction. What is the identity of the bubbles?

15. In station 5, ethanol reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water, but there were no products
observed during the reaction. Describe why you could not see the carbon dioxide and water.
