Worksheet 7.1

This document provides a tutorial on evaluating indefinite integrals using integration by parts. It includes 5 examples of applying integration by parts to find integrals of various functions, such as √x ln(x), cos-1(x), x2 + 3x + 1e-x, and e2xsin(3x). The examples demonstrate how to set up and solve integrals using the integration by parts formula, and in some cases require multiple applications of integration by parts or introducing a variable to solve. Homework exercises are assigned from the textbook.

MAC2312 Name: _______________________________________________________________________________ Worksheet 7.

1
Integration By Parts
Directions: Work in your small group to complete this tutorial. Return the completed worksheet along with
the homework exercises at the beginning of next class. All answers must be justified and work shown for full
credit. Explanations should be written using complete sentences in the spaces provided.

1. Follow the steps below to find the indefinite integral of √𝑥 ln(𝑥).

a) To compute ∫ √𝑥 ln(𝑥) 𝑑𝑥, we use integration by parts (the integral is the product of two
𝑑𝑣
functions √𝑥 and ln(𝑥)). Choose one of these functions to be 𝑢 and the other to be 𝑑𝑥 using
LIATE.

𝑢 = _____________________ 𝑑𝑣 = _____________________𝑑𝑥

𝑑𝑢 = _____________________ 𝑣 = _____________________

b) Using the above choices, write the integral using the integration by parts formula (the only
variable involved should be 𝑥):

∫ √𝑥 ln(𝑥)𝑑𝑥 = __________________________________ − ∫ _______________________________________

c) Solve the integral you found in (b) to find the indefinite integral of √𝑥 ln(𝑥)
𝒅 𝟏
2. Evaluate the integral using integration by parts. Hints: LIATE, (𝐜𝐨𝐬 −𝟏 (𝒙)) = −
𝒅𝒙 √𝟏−𝒙𝟐

∫ cos −1 (𝑥) 𝑑𝑥

3. Evaluate the definite integral using integration by parts. Hint: Find an antiderivative and then
evaluate it at the bounds of integration.

1/2
∫ 𝑥 cos(𝜋𝑥) 𝑑𝑥
0
4. For some integrals, you may need to use integration by parts more than once. Evaluate the integral

∫(𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 1)𝑒 −𝑥 𝑑𝑥
5. Some integrals require a little extra cleverness to solve. Follow the steps to evaluate (use LIATE)
∫ 𝑒 2𝑥 sin(3𝑥) 𝑑𝑥
a) Use integration by parts to rewrite the integral

𝑢 = _____________________ 𝑑𝑣 = _____________________𝑑𝑥

𝑑𝑢 = _____________________ 𝑣 = _____________________

∫ 𝑒 2𝑥 sin(3𝑥) 𝑑𝑥 = __________________________________ − ∫ _______________________________________

b) Simplify and rewrite the integral

∫ 𝑒 2𝑥 sin(3𝑥) 𝑑𝑥 =

c) This integral is still not solvable using basic formulas, so we use integration by parts again for
the new integral in (b).
𝑢 = _____________________ 𝑑𝑣 = _____________________𝑑𝑥

𝑑𝑢 = _____________________ 𝑣 = _____________________
3 3
− ∫ 𝑒 2𝑥 cos(3𝑥) 𝑑𝑥 = − [__________________________________ − ∫ _______________________________________]
2 2
d) Simplify and rewrite the integral
3
− ∫ 𝑒 2𝑥 cos(3𝑥) =
2

e) Combine (b) and (d) and simplify

∫ 𝑒 2𝑥 sin(3𝑥) 𝑑𝑥 =

f) Notice in (d) we get back to the SAME integral we originally set out to solve! Let
𝕀 = ∫ 𝑒 2𝑥 sin(3𝑥) 𝑑𝑥
and rewrite the equation in (e) using 𝕀 (viewing it as a variable) and solve for 𝕀. This will be the
integral we are looking for.
