Note The design and implementation of modifications to the hull which might
be required to achieve satisfactory performance of the speed log are
beyond the scope of Sperry Marine's expertise or responsibility and are,
therefore, the responsibility of the shipyard or shipowner.
Note It is the responsibility of the shipyard or ship owner to contact the rele-
vant classification society to determine the requirements for approval
and to arrange field supervision and inspection of the installation.

1 Introduction
1.1 Description
The EM-Log Sensor FNF I, Type 4040 or 4726 respectively, is an electro-
magnetic flow sensor used to determine a vessel’s longitudinal speed
through the water in the Sperry Marine electromagnetic speed log sys-
tems NAVIKNOT. The sensor is suited for installation in steel or alumin-
ium vessels with single or double bottom.
The sensor FNF I is flush-fitted, i.e. the sensor head with the electrodes
projects only little from the vessel’s bottom.
The sensor type 4040 is fitted to an attachment flange, to be welded to
the vessel’s bottom by the shipyard, flush with the hull. The sensor may
be raised or lowered within the flange to let its head project between
approx. 19 and 39 mm from the outer skin of the hull.
The sensor type 4726 is fitted to a streamlined hydrofairing to be sup-
plied by the shipyard, manufactured according to Sperry Marine’s speci-
fications. The sensor position is fixed within the hydrofairing, which
itself projects approx. 50 mm from the outer skin of the hull
The sensor head is sealed in plastic and is watertight up to a pressure of
at least 2 bar (2000 hectopascal).

Principal Requirements
The sensor measures the speed of the water flowing past it at a distance
of a few millimetres. It is therefore obvious that the speed at which the
water flows past the point of measurement should not be influenced by
the vessel's hull.
The boundary layer is just a few millimetres thick at the vessel's bow,
increasing to over one metre at the stern. Marine growth on the under-
water hull increases its thickness. In addition, areas of turbulence may
form within the boundary layer under certain conditions (e.g. speed,
draught, depth of water, state of sea) or due to marine growth or the
presence of outboard openings.

In most cases, field service will attend a vessel only after mechanical
installation of the sensor has been carried out by the shipyard. The ves-
sel is likely to be afloat then.
Before carrying out the electrical installation the sensor, field service
should verify that all parts supplied by the yard have been manufac-
tured, welding has been carried out and all parts have been installed
correctly, according to dimension/installation drawing 4040-0112-01 or
4726-0112-01, respectively, and all other relevant documents provided
by Sperry Marine for the installation at hand.
Verify that all dimensions of the flange and its alignment to the vessel’s
fore-and-aft axis are within the tolerances specified in the installation/
dimension drawing. Verify also that a marking indicating the ahead
direction is present and facing towards the bow.
The flange must be welded to the vessel’s bottom flush with the outer
skin of the hull. The weld seam must be ground flush with the hull.

Verify that all dimensions of the hydrofairing and its alignment to the
vessel’s fore-and-aft axis are within the tolerances specified in the instal-
lation/dimension drawing. Verify also that a marking indicating the
ahead direction is present and facing towards the bow.
The fairing must be welded to the vessel’s bottom and the weld seam
ground and smoth finished so that a soft transition is made between the
hull and the curved surface of the hydrofairing.
Verify that the pipe’s dimensions are within the tolerances specified in
the installation/dimension drawing. Once the sensor cable is installed,
the pipe arrangement must seal off the sensor compartment watertight.
If the optional sensor attachment flange is used, verify that the pipe is
provided with a mating attachment flange.

ing material, stock no. 29450
Installation Procedure
1. Screw the studs (1) with the short threaded end into the attachment
flange (2) or hydrofairing welded to the vessel's hull.
2. Apply sealing compound to both sides of the gasket (3) and fit it to
the underside of the bushing (4).
3. Fit the bushing with gasket to the attachment flange or hydrofairing
and align the bushing with the ahead marking on the flange or fair-
ing, so that the hole for the index pin (5) points ahead exactly.
4. Place the attachment ring (6) over the bushing and studs.
5. Put washers and nuts (7) onto the studs. Tighten the nuts in a series
of diagonal opposites.
6. Fit the O-ring (8) into the groove in the sensor (9).
7. Screw the ring nut (10) onto the sensor, down to the end of the
thread.
8. Apply sealing compound to both sides of the gasket (11).
9. Place the gasket onto the bushing, making sure to align it with the
threads and hole in the bushing.
10. Insert the sensor into the bushing and push down on it until the nut
rests on the gasket. The hole for the index pin must point ahead
exactly and must align with the hole in the bushing.
11. For the sensor type 4726 only:
Verify now that the sensor head is flush with the surface of the
hydrofairing. If required, lower the sensor inside the bushing by
turning the ring nut up on its thread.
12. Screw the locking screw (12) into the bushing, to lock the sensor in
place. Make sure that the cylindrical tip of the screw rests on the rim
of the sensor, so that it prevents the sensor from being forced out of
the bushing by water pressure, once the vessel is afloat.
Page 20
EM-Log Sensor FNF I 004040-0125-001/B
13. Put the washer and nut (13) onto the locking screw and firmly tighten
the nut.
14. Draw the sensor cable (14) through the hole in the sensor cap (15).
15. Insert the smaller index pin (16) into the inner hole in the cap.
16. Insert the larger index pin (5) into the outer hole in the cap.
17. Put the cap onto the bushing and sensor so that both index pins
engage into the corresponding holes.
18. Fasten the sensor cap to the bushing with the nuts and washers (17).
19. Draw the sensor cable through the preassembled plastic tube with
fittings (18).
20. Screw the tube fitting into the sensor cap and tighten it firmly.
21. If the optional attachment flange for the plastic tube is used:
a) Slide the flange (19) over the sensor cable and screw it onto the
fitting at the end of the tube
b) Firmly tighten the fitting in the flange.
c) Apply sealing compound to both sides of the gasket (20), slide
the gasket over the sensor cable and position it on the flange.
d) Draw the sensor cable through the pipe conduit installed by the
yard and firmly attach the flange with gasket to the flange on the
pipe, using the bolts (21), washers and nuts (22) provided.
If no attachment flange for the plastic tube is used:
a) Screw the fitting at the end of the tube into the female PG 16
thread in the pipe.
If nesessary, loosen the fitting’s cap to allow the fitting to rotate
on the tube while fastening the fitting to the pipe conduit. Make
sure to firmly re-tighten the fitting cap.
b) Firmly tighten the fitting.
⇒The mechanical installation of the sensor is now complete.
Proceed with the connection of the sensor cable to the preamplifier and
wire up the NAVIKNOT system according to the wiring diagram and
other relevant information provided. As soon as possible, carry out a
complete function check to verify the correct operation of the sensor.
Page 21
004040-0125-001/B EM-Log Sensor FNF I
When installed as described above, the head of the sensor type 4040 will
protrude approx. 19 mm beyond the outer skin of the hull. This will nor-
mally suffice for satisfactory performance of the sensor, provided that
the sensor is installed at an approved location, free from turbulence, in a
vessel with a conventional hull shape.
It may be found then, that the sensor does not protrude enough beyond
the hull to keep clear from boundary layer effects or local turbulences. In
this case, the sensor is to be lowered further.
Note The head of the sensor type 4040 may be lowered by approx. 20 mm
within its bushing, resulting in a maximum projection of approx. 39 mm
from the outer skin of the hull
6. Press down on the cap to push the sensor into the bushing until the
ring nut rests on the gasket.
7. Fasten the cap to the bushing with the bolts and washers.

AC Power Configuration
If the amplifier is required to operate on 115 VAC, the two wire links
across terminals 9 and 12 must be removed and placed across
terminals 7 and 12 and terminals 10 and 13 respectively.

The preamplifier housing possesses two cable glands for feeding the
sensor and the data/power cables respectively to the preamplifier PCB.
The cable from the sensor is to be inserted through the larger gland. It is
an integral part of the sensor and may not be lengthened. In case the
sensor cable is too long, it may be shortened to the required length.
The power and data lines are to be inserted through the smaller gland.
In order to ensure proper sealing, these should run within in a common
shielded cable, with a minimum cross section of 1.5 mm 2.
The length of cabling between the preamplifier and the NAVIKNOT elec-
tronics unit should not exceed 500 m.

5 Regular Maintenance
Each time the vessel is drydocked or taken out of the water, the sensor
should be visually inspected and cleaned.
If the sensor head shows signs of damage, such as from grounding of
the vessel, it must be replaced. Any roughness on the hull area around
the sensor must be made smooth and flush.
Note Under conditions of heavy marine growth, more frequent cleaning may
be required. If the vessel cannot be drydocked or taken out of the water,
cleaning may also be performed by a diver.

4. If the fuse was not blown during the check of the preamplifier, check
the sensor for correct resistance values as follows.
Note For the resistance check of the sensor, the vessel must be afloat and not
in a drydock.
R 1 = 1 kΩ
R 2 = 2 MΩ
R 3 = 47 Ω, 100 W
