General Safety Information

WARNING FOR ALL SENSOR INSTALLATION, MAINTENANCE AND

SERVICE PROCEDURES:

Do not enter any confined space on a ship without being trained on

safety procedures and work practices relating to confined spaces.
As a minimum, ensure that the atmosphere in the confined space is safe
and breathable. Sperry Marine recommends that a competent person
test the atmosphere for oxygen deficiency, combustible gases, hydro-
gen sulifide, and other hazardous gases that are reasonable to expect in
that area. Vent the area, as necessary, to provide a safe, breathable
atmosphere.
Do not enter a confined space unaccompanied and without a third per-
son's constant supervision from a safe distance or from the entrance to
the confined space. Ensure that both persons carry working flashlights
with fresh batteries.

Safety Instructions for Service Personnel

DANGER Life danger through electrical shock

Live voltages are present at certain terminals and tracks on the pream-
plifier PCB, when the AC supply power is switched on.
Always make sure the AC power supply is switched off and safeguarded
against accidental switching-on, when carrying out a troubleshooting
procedure which does not require the preamplifier to be powered on .
Be extremely careful to never touch the PCB or the connecting wires,
when troubleshooting the preamplifier under power.

WARNING Risk of electrical shock

When the AC supply power is switched on, live voltages are present at
certain terminals and tracks on the preamplifier PCB.
Always make sure the AC power supply is switched off and safeguarded
against accidental switching-on, when installing the preamplifier.

WARNING Risk of flooding

If the locking screw is unscrewed too far, water pressure may force the
sensor out of the bushing when the sensor cap is removed, leading to
flooding of the sensor compartment.
Do not unscrew the locking screw by more than half a turn.

CAUTION Risk of damage by unprofessional welding

Unprofessional welding bears high risks and can lead to extensive dam-
age of the vessel‘s equipment.
Always maintain, that all welding work must be carried out by a qualified
welder, examined according to the rules of the relevant classification
society.

CAUTION Risk of grounding problems

Do NOT connect the sensor cable screen to the earth connection (ship’s
ground). Do NOT let the sensor cable screen make contact with ship’s
ground through the cable gland.
Connect the sensor cable screen to terminal 21 (shielding) only.

CAUTION Risk of damage

Contamination of or damage to the surface finish of the sensor head will
harm the function and degrade the system accuracy.
Avoid touching the sensor head with the hands.
Do not let it come into contact with grease.

Note Under conditions of heavy marine growth, more frequent cleaning may
be required. If the vessel cannot be drydocked or taken out of the water,
cleaning may also be performed by a diver.

CAUTION Risk of damage

Components on the preamplifier PCB are sensitive to static discharge.
Take the necessary precautions to prevent electrostatic discharges.
Avoid touching any of the electronic circuitry.

1 Introduction

1.1 Description
The EM-Log Sensor FNF I, Type 4040 or 4726 respectively, is an electro-
magnetic flow sensor used to determine a vessel’s longitudinal speed
through the water in the Sperry Marine electromagnetic speed log sys-
tems NAVIKNOT. The sensor is suited for installation in steel or alumin-
ium vessels with single or double bottom.

The sensor is connected to the preamplifier E, type 2863.

The preamplifier provides an AC excitation current which, applied to the
sensor coil, generates a magnetic field around the sensor.
The ship’s motion through the water gives rise to an electrical field per-
pendicular to the magnetic field and the ship’s motion.
The resulting signal is picked up by the sensor electrodes, passed on to
the preamplifier and converted to a digital format (NAVIKNOT protocol).

The sensor FNF I is flush-fitted, i.e. the sensor head with the electrodes
projects only little from the vessel’s bottom.
The sensor type 4040 is fitted to an attachment flange, to be welded to
the vessel’s bottom by the shipyard, flush with the hull. The sensor may
be raised or lowered within the flange to let its head project between
approx. 19 and 39 mm from the outer skin of the hull.
The sensor type 4726 is fitted to a streamlined hydrofairing to be sup-
plied by the shipyard, manufactured according to Sperry Marine’s speci-
fications. The sensor position is fixed within the hydrofairing, which
itself projects approx. 50 mm from the outer skin of the hull
The sensor head is sealed in plastic and is watertight up to a pressure of
at least 2 bar (2000 hectopascal).

The sensor as delivered by Sperry Marine comprises the cylindrical sen-

sor unit, complete with the installation fitting and mounting hardware.
The installation fitting is bolted to the attachment flange or hydrofairing
respectively, manufactured and welded to the hull by the shipyard.

The sensor is installed in drydock, from inside the vessel. Replacement

of the sensor while the vessel is afloat may be carried out only by
authorized Sperry Marine field service personnel.

2 Sensor Location

2.1 Determining the Sensor Location

As early as possible, contact Sperry Marine engineering to receive spe-
cific recommendations for the location of the sensor. These recommen-
dations will be based upon the principal requirements and general
guidelines given below and upon the particular properties of the vessel.

Once possible sensor locations have been determined, contact Sperry

Marine engineering to obtain location approval. Include drawings of the
vessel that show the shape of the bow and that have legible frame num-
bers and frame spacing. Typical drawings to provide include general
arrangement drawings, lines drawings, cross sectional drawings and
plan view drawings.
If available, information showing the flow lines of the water past the
hull, including pictures of the basin model, should also be provided.

Note Warranty Note

Proper speed log performance can be expected only if the sensor is
located per Sperry Marine’s recommendations and installed according to
the instructions given in the dimension/installation drawing.
Sperry Marine will not accept responsibility for unsatisfactory speed log
performance, for ship modifications required to improve speed log per-
formance or for the removal of the system if it fails to perform satisfacto-
rily as a result of improper sensor location or equipment installation.

Page 13

Principal Requirements

The sensor measures the speed of the water flowing past it at a distance
of a few millimetres. It is therefore obvious that the speed at which the
water flows past the point of measurement should not be influenced by
the vessel's hull.

However, below every vessel moving through the water, there is a

wedge-shaped boundary layer, within which the flow speed is lower
than the vessel’s actual speed through the water.
Directly at the hull surface, the flow speed is zero. Away from the hull,
the flow speed increases until it reaches the actual speed at the outer
edge of the boundary layer.

The boundary layer is just a few millimetres thick at the vessel's bow,
increasing to over one metre at the stern. Marine growth on the under-
water hull increases its thickness. In addition, areas of turbulence may
form within the boundary layer under certain conditions (e.g. speed,
draught, depth of water, state of sea) or due to marine growth or the
presence of outboard openings.

As the sensor FNF I is of the flush fitted type, it is to be installed in the

foremost area of the vessel to prevent boundary-layer effects from dis-
turbing the speed measurement.
For ships with bulbous bows, the sensor is to be installed between 1.5
and 5 metres from the front of the bow. If the sensor is positioned less
than 1.5 metres from the front of the bow, air bubbles will falsify the
speed readings. If the sensor is positioned more than 5 metres from the
front of the bow, the boundary layer may be too thick1.

installation of sensor

1. The above location requirements apply to displacement vessels with conven-

tional hull shapes only.
For unconventionally shaped hulls, e.g. catamarans, or special location
requirements, e.g. in double-ended ferries, contact Sperry Marine for an
assessment of the suitability of the sensor FNF I in the specific case.

Page 14

General Guidelines

• If possible. the sensor is to be installed in a perpendicular position in

the lower section of the bulb on the keel line.
Deviation from the perpendicular relative to a plane through the ves-
sel's Y and Z axes (i.e. tilt towards bow or stern) is not to exceed 5°.
Deviation from the perpendicular relative to a plane through the ves-
sel's fore-and-aft (X) and Z axes (i.e. tilt towards starboard or port)
may be permissible to a maximum of 30°, under particularly favoura-
ble conditions.
• The sensor is not to be installed in the keel or bilge block area. Care
is to be taken to ensure that the sensor will not be damaged by the
anchor or the anchor chain.
• The outer hull of the vessel in the vicinity of the sensor must be free
of sudden projections, steps and sharp edges, because transverse
currents and turbulence will falsify readings.
• The sensor must be installed at least 5 m away from water in- and
outlets and must be located forward and well away of bow thruster
tunnels because currents caused by these will falsify readings.
• The sensor must always remain submerged, even with a minimum
of cargo in heavy seas.
• On tankers, the sensor must not be installed within the Ex-area.
Under no circumstances may the sensor come into contact with
explosive cargoes.
• The sensor must be installed at least 0.5 m away from echosounders
and similar equipment.
• The sensor must be installed at least 10 m away from corrosion pro-
tection electrodes. The maximum AC voltage component of the sup-
ply voltage of active corrosion protection electrodes may not exceed
20 mV eff.
• In case excessive marine growth might occur in the vicinity of the
sensor, the sensor head and the outer area of the sensor tube may
be treated with an antifouling agent, e.g. Hempel Prop-AF 768 DE
spray or Hempel Mille Star 7120 D. The electrodes must be kept
absolutely free from coating.

3 Installation of the Sensor

In most cases, field service will attend a vessel only after mechanical
installation of the sensor has been carried out by the shipyard. The ves-
sel is likely to be afloat then.

Before carrying out the electrical installation the sensor, field service
should verify that all parts supplied by the yard have been manufac-
tured, welding has been carried out and all parts have been installed
correctly, according to dimension/installation drawing 4040-0112-01 or
4726-0112-01, respectively, and all other relevant documents provided
by Sperry Marine for the installation at hand.

3.1 Shipyard-supplied Parts and Welding

CAUTION Risk of damage by unprofessional welding

Unprofessional welding bears high risks and can lead to extensive dam-
age of the vessel‘s equipment.
Always maintain, that all welding work must be carried out by a qualified
welder, examined according to the rules of the relevant classification
society.

Note If the sensor is installed in a floodable compartment, all applicable gen-

eral safety regulations must be observed.

Attachment Flange (Sensor Type 4040)

For mounting the sensor FNF I, type 4040, an attachment flange as

shown in dimension/installation drawing 4040-0112-01 is to be manufac-
tured from the same material as the vessel's hull and welded to the ves-
sel's bottom at the sensor location.

For installation in aluminium vessels, isolation bushings made of POM

or Delrin must be provided and press fitted into the attachment flange
by the shipyard. Additional provisions may be required to prevent con-
tact corrosion between the stainless steel parts of the sensor and the
aluminium hull.

Verify that all dimensions of the flange and its alignment to the vessel’s
fore-and-aft axis are within the tolerances specified in the installation/
dimension drawing. Verify also that a marking indicating the ahead
direction is present and facing towards the bow.
The flange must be welded to the vessel’s bottom flush with the outer
skin of the hull. The weld seam must be ground flush with the hull.

Page 17
004040-0125-001/B EM-Log Sensor FNF I

Hydrofairing (Sensor Type 4726)

For mounting the sensor FNF I, type 47,26, a hydrofairing as shown in

dimension/installation drawing 4726-0112-01 is to be manufactured from
the same material as the hull and welded to the vessel's bottom at the
sensor location.

The dimension/installation gives the required radii to turn the fairing

profile from cylindrical stock on a lathe. From this profile, a section is
then cut off and machined further to become the fairing. Alternatively,
the fairing may be CNC-milled from the solid. The surface of the fairing
is to be smooth finished.

For installation in aluminium vessels, isolation bushings made of POM

or Delrin must be provided and press fitted into the hydrofairing by the
shipyard.
Additional provisions may be required to prevent contact corrosion
between the stainless steel parts of the sensor and the aluminium hull.

Verify that all dimensions of the hydrofairing and its alignment to the
vessel’s fore-and-aft axis are within the tolerances specified in the instal-
lation/dimension drawing. Verify also that a marking indicating the
ahead direction is present and facing towards the bow.
The fairing must be welded to the vessel’s bottom and the weld seam
ground and smoth finished so that a soft transition is made between the
hull and the curved surface of the hydrofairing.

Cable Conduit (Steel or Aluminium pipe)

A pipe to conduct the sensor cable out of the sensor compartment is to

be manufactured from the same material as the vessel’s hull and welded
to the vessel structure, as shown in dimension/installation drawing
4040-0112-01 or 4726-0112-01 respectively. The sensor attachment flange
shown in the dimension/installation drawing is available as an optional
accessory under Sperry Marine stock no. 29450.
At the sensor side, the pipe is to be provided with a female PG 16 thread
or an attachment flange. At the preamplifier side, a bulkhead fitting or
pipe cap with a watertight cable gland is to be provided.

Verify that the pipe’s dimensions are within the tolerances specified in
the installation/dimension drawing. Once the sensor cable is installed,
the pipe arrangement must seal off the sensor compartment watertight.
If the optional sensor attachment flange is used, verify that the pipe is
provided with a mating attachment flange.

A minimum vertical distance of 500 mm is required between the top of

the sensor and the end of the pipe, to provide enough access space for
sensor installation and service.

3.3 Installing the Sensor

Note A tag indicating the sensor-specific “sensitivity” value will be found

attached to the sensor.
Remove the tag from the sensor and store it safely for future reference.
The sensitivity value is required for the proper configuration of the
NAVIKNOT system via the service setup menu.

Materials and Tools Required

• The sensor FNF I, type 4040,, stock no. 73188, preassembled and
complete with mounting material, as supplied by Sperry Marine.
or:
The sensor FNF I,, type 4726, stock no. 74218, preassembled and
complete with mounting material, as supplied by Sperry Marine.
• 24 mm, 17 mm and 13 mm open-ended spanners
• Optionally: the cable tube attachment flange, complete with mount-
ing material, stock no. 29450

Installation Procedure

1. Screw the studs (1) with the short threaded end into the attachment
flange (2) or hydrofairing welded to the vessel's hull.
2. Apply sealing compound to both sides of the gasket (3) and fit it to
the underside of the bushing (4).
3. Fit the bushing with gasket to the attachment flange or hydrofairing
and align the bushing with the ahead marking on the flange or fair-
ing, so that the hole for the index pin (5) points ahead exactly.
4. Place the attachment ring (6) over the bushing and studs.
5. Put washers and nuts (7) onto the studs. Tighten the nuts in a series
of diagonal opposites.
6. Fit the O-ring (8) into the groove in the sensor (9).
7. Screw the ring nut (10) onto the sensor, down to the end of the
thread.
8. Apply sealing compound to both sides of the gasket (11).
9. Place the gasket onto the bushing, making sure to align it with the
threads and hole in the bushing.
10. Insert the sensor into the bushing and push down on it until the nut
rests on the gasket. The hole for the index pin must point ahead
exactly and must align with the hole in the bushing.
11. For the sensor type 4726 only:
Verify now that the sensor head is flush with the surface of the
hydrofairing. If required, lower the sensor inside the bushing by
turning the ring nut up on its thread.
12. Screw the locking screw (12) into the bushing, to lock the sensor in
place. Make sure that the cylindrical tip of the screw rests on the rim
of the sensor, so that it prevents the sensor from being forced out of
the bushing by water pressure, once the vessel is afloat.

Page 20
EM-Log Sensor FNF I 004040-0125-001/B

13. Put the washer and nut (13) onto the locking screw and firmly tighten
the nut.
14. Draw the sensor cable (14) through the hole in the sensor cap (15).
15. Insert the smaller index pin (16) into the inner hole in the cap.
16. Insert the larger index pin (5) into the outer hole in the cap.
17. Put the cap onto the bushing and sensor so that both index pins
engage into the corresponding holes.
18. Fasten the sensor cap to the bushing with the nuts and washers (17).

CAUTION Risk of damage

Make sure not to damage or loose the O-rings from the tube fittings.

19. Draw the sensor cable through the preassembled plastic tube with
fittings (18).
20. Screw the tube fitting into the sensor cap and tighten it firmly.
21. If the optional attachment flange for the plastic tube is used:
a) Slide the flange (19) over the sensor cable and screw it onto the
fitting at the end of the tube
b) Firmly tighten the fitting in the flange.
c) Apply sealing compound to both sides of the gasket (20), slide
the gasket over the sensor cable and position it on the flange.
d) Draw the sensor cable through the pipe conduit installed by the
yard and firmly attach the flange with gasket to the flange on the
pipe, using the bolts (21), washers and nuts (22) provided.
If no attachment flange for the plastic tube is used:
a) Screw the fitting at the end of the tube into the female PG 16
thread in the pipe.
If nesessary, loosen the fitting’s cap to allow the fitting to rotate
on the tube while fastening the fitting to the pipe conduit. Make
sure to firmly re-tighten the fitting cap.
b) Firmly tighten the fitting.
⇒The mechanical installation of the sensor is now complete.

Proceed with the connection of the sensor cable to the preamplifier and
wire up the NAVIKNOT system according to the wiring diagram and
other relevant information provided. As soon as possible, carry out a
complete function check to verify the correct operation of the sensor.

Page 21
004040-0125-001/B EM-Log Sensor FNF I

Adjusting the Sensor (Type 4040 only)

When installed as described above, the head of the sensor type 4040 will
protrude approx. 19 mm beyond the outer skin of the hull. This will nor-
mally suffice for satisfactory performance of the sensor, provided that
the sensor is installed at an approved location, free from turbulence, in a
vessel with a conventional hull shape.

However, satisfactory performance can only be verified during sea trials,

after the NAVIKNOT system has been installed completely.

It may be found then, that the sensor does not protrude enough beyond
the hull to keep clear from boundary layer effects or local turbulences. In
this case, the sensor is to be lowered further.

Note The head of the sensor type 4040 may be lowered by approx. 20 mm
within its bushing, resulting in a maximum projection of approx. 39 mm
from the outer skin of the hull

To adjust the sensor:

WARNING Risk of flooding

If the locking screw is unscrewed too far, water pressure may force the
sensor out of the bushing when the sensor cap is removed, leading to
flooding of the sensor compartment.
Do not unscrew the locking screw by more than half a turn.

Note If the sensor is installed in a floodable compartment, all applicable gen-

eral safety regulations must be observed.

1. Make sure that the locking screw (12) is tight.

2. Loosen NOT MORE than half a turn the nut (13) securing the locking
screw. Turn the locking screw counterclockwise through 90° (one
quarter turn) and re-tighten the nut.
3. Unscrew and remove the bolts and washers (17) retaining the sensor
cap (15).
4. Remove the cap from the sensor (9) and bushing (4).
5. Turn the ring nut (10) counterclockwise until the distance between
the nut and the gasket (11) is equal to the length by which the sensor
is to be lowered. Each turn of the nut lowers the sensor by 1.5 mm
Put the sensor cap back onto the sensor and bushing, making sure that
the index pins (5, 15) correctly engage in their holes.

6. Press down on the cap to push the sensor into the bushing until the
ring nut rests on the gasket.
7. Fasten the cap to the bushing with the bolts and washers.

4 Installation of the Preamplifier

4.1 Mechanical Installation

The preamplifier is to be installed at a dry location in the vicinity of the
sensor. Preferably, it is to be installed above the vessel's water line, to
make sure that in case of the sensor suffering mechanical damage, no
water will be forced through the cable into the preamplifier housing.

The preamplifier is to be attached to a level surface with four M6 screws

(or nuts and bolts). For the dimensions of the housing, refer to drawing
2863-0112-02. The preamplifier may be installed vertically, horizontally
or inclined. Although the preamplifier generates only little heat, the
housing may not be painted or covered in any other way.

4.2 Electrical Installation

CAUTION Risk of damage

Components on the preamplifier PCB are sensitive to static discharge.
Take the necessary precautions to prevent electrostatic discharges.
Avoid touching any of the electronic circuitry.

AC Power Configuration

The preamplifier is delivered prewired for connection to 230VAC.

If the amplifier is required to operate on 115 VAC, the two wire links
across terminals 9 and 12 must be removed and placed across
terminals 7 and 12 and terminals 10 and 13 respectively.

The preamplifier housing possesses two cable glands for feeding the
sensor and the data/power cables respectively to the preamplifier PCB.

The cable from the sensor is to be inserted through the larger gland. It is
an integral part of the sensor and may not be lengthened. In case the
sensor cable is too long, it may be shortened to the required length.

The power and data lines are to be inserted through the smaller gland.
In order to ensure proper sealing, these should run within in a common
shielded cable, with a minimum cross section of 1.5 mm 2.

The length of cabling between the preamplifier and the NAVIKNOT elec-
tronics unit should not exceed 500 m.

5 Regular Maintenance

Each time the vessel is drydocked or taken out of the water, the sensor
should be visually inspected and cleaned.
If the sensor head shows signs of damage, such as from grounding of
the vessel, it must be replaced. Any roughness on the hull area around
the sensor must be made smooth and flush.

5.1 Cleaning the Sensor

Materials and Tools Required

• Fine-grained emery paper (no coarser than 240 grit)

• A clean piece of cloth, free of grease or oil

Cleaning the Sensor

1. Clean the sensor head with the emery paper

2. Dry the sensor head with the piece of cloth.

6 Corrective Maintenance

6.1 Sensor Replacement

Replacement of the sensor may be carried out only by authorized Sperry
Marine field service personnel.

7 Troubleshooting

CAUTION Risk of damage

Components on the preamplifier PCB are sensitive to static discharge.
Take the necessary precautions to prevent electrostatic discharges.
Avoid touching any of the electronic circuitry.

Malfunction of the sensor, resulting in a “Sensor Failure” alarm being

shown at the NAVIKNOT control and display unit, may be caused by a
mechanical or electrical defect in the sensor or by a defective preampli-
fier. As the preamplifier contains no built-in test circuitry, only a basic
electrical check is possible in the field.

7.1 Electrical Check of the Preamplifier and Sensor

1. Check the power supply to the preamplifier.
2. Check the data cable between the preamplifier and the electronics
unit for breaks and short circuits.
3. Switch off the power to the preamplifier.
Remove the cover from the preamplifier and check the fuse.
If the fuse is blown, replace it and check as follows:
– At the terminal strip in the preamplifier, disconnect the sensor:
terminal 20: black (coil)
terminal 22: grey (coil)
terminal 23: blue (electrode)
terminal 24: red (electrode)
terminal 21: cable screen (shielding)
Switch on the power. If the fuse blows while the sensor is discon-
nected, the preamplifier PCB is defective.
– If the fuse was not blown with the sensor disconnected, switch
off the power and reconnect the sensor. Switch on the power
again. If the fuse now blows, the sensor is defective.

Page 29
004040-0125-001/B EM-Log Sensor FNF I

4. If the fuse was not blown during the check of the preamplifier, check
the sensor for correct resistance values as follows.

Note For the resistance check of the sensor, the vessel must be afloat and not
in a drydock.

– Switch off the power to the preamplifier.

– Using an ohmmeter, check for the following resistance values:
black to grey: approx.12 Ω
black to blue, black to red, black to screen: ∞ (open)
blue to red: approx. 150 - 200 kΩ
blue to screen, red to screen: within in the MΩ range.
Deviations from the above values indicate that the sensor is defec-
tive and must be replaced. If the sensor is not defective, the fault will
be in the preamplifier.

Sensor Simulator Circuit

To check the function of the preamplifier without a sensor connected,

service personnel may construct a simulator circuit as shown below.

Figure 7-1: to terminals:

gr
Sensor simulator circuit 22 (coil)

23 (electrode)
R3 r
24 (electrode)
R2 bk
20 (coil)
21 (shielding)

R 1 = 1 kΩ
R 2 = 2 MΩ
R 3 = 47 Ω, 100 W

With this simulator circuit connected instead of an EM sensor, the pre-

amplifier will produce speed data covering a range from around zero
knots (depending on part tolerances) to the theoretical maximum speed.
