Define Modulation?

Modulation is a process that varies the characteristics of a high frequency carrier signal based on an input modulating signal. There are two main types of analog modulation: amplitude modulation and angle modulation, which includes frequency and phase modulation. The modulation index for AM is the ratio of the modulating signal amplitude to the carrier amplitude, and can be under, critical, or over modulation. Modulation provides benefits like easier transmission, multiplexing, reduced noise, narrow bandwidth, frequency assignment, and reducing equipment limitations. Analog modulation is classified as continuous wave or pulse modulation, with continuous wave further classified.
