Unit 2 Problems

The document contains 5 problems related to frequency modulation (FM) radio transmission. Problem 1 asks to estimate the bandwidth of a commercial FM radio signal using Carson's Rule, given the audio range and allowed frequency deviation. Problem 2 asks to calculate the bandwidth of an FM signal given the modulating message signal and frequency deviation constant. Problem 3 asks to calculate the phase deviation constant needed to give a PM signal the same bandwidth as the FM signal in Problem 2. Problem 4 asks to calculate the frequency deviation, modulation index, and bandwidth given a sinusoidal modulating signal's amplitude and frequency and the FM generator's frequency sensitivity. Problem 5 asks to calculate the frequency deviation, bandwidth, and power of an FM wave given its equation.

1.

For commercial FM radio, the audio message signal has a spectral range of 30 Hz to 15
kHz, and the FCC allows a frequency deviation of 75 kHz. Estimate the transmission
bandwidth for commercial FM using Carson’s Rule.

2. The message signal input to a modulator is 10cos(2  104 t). If frequency modulation
with frequency deviation constant kf = 104  is performed, find the bandwidth of the resulting
FM signal.

3. If phase modulation is performed using the message signal 10cos(2  104 t) used in the
previous problem, find the phase deviation constant kp giving the PM signal the same
bandwidth, namely, 120 kHz.

4. A sinusoidal modulating waveform of amplitude 5 V and a frequency of 2 KHz is applied

to FM generator, which has a frequency sensitivity of 40 Hz/volt. Calculate the frequency
deviation, modulation index, and bandwidth.

5. An FM wave is given by s(t)=20cos(8π×106t+9sin(2π×103t)). Calculate the frequency

deviation, bandwidth, and power of FM wave.
