The lesson plan utilizes scaffolding through solve and share, guided practice, and independent practice. It also differentiates instruction by providing leveled questions for independent practice.

The lesson plan is divided into sections for students to first explore concepts, then receive guided instruction, and finally demonstrate independent practice. The independent practice contains leveled questions to challenge students of all academic abilities. Small group instruction is also provided.

The teacher checks for understanding through questions in the chat and takes notes on students who need additional support. However, there is no formal assessment mentioned.

Part A: Lesson Plan Review

Scaffolding and Differentiation

The lesson plan that I chose to look over was a math lesson for second grade. The

scaffolding and differentiation that I see in the plan is purposeful. The lesson is divided into 2

scaffolded sections including solve and share, guided practice, and independent practice. This

really benefits students because they first get to explore the concept in the solve and share. Then

they can follow along with the teacher to comprehend what they are learning. Finally, the teacher

can see if the students are understanding the skills by analyzing the independent practice section.

The independent practice section is differentiated because it has various leveled questions. The

teacher gives the students a choice of which problems they want to do. This way students of all

academic levels can challenge themselves. Lastly, the teacher provides small group zoom

instruction for her struggling students at the end of the lesson.

Alignment and Materials

The teacher has successfully aligned her objective accurately to the lesson plan. This

helps to see what the teacher wants the outcome of this lesson to be. It also benefits the teacher if

the students do not reach that objective then the teacher can work on it another day. The learning

materials that the teacher used is the envisions math book. She states in her lesson plan that she

will show the digital pages as the students follow along in their math books. This helps to guide

the students through the lesson especially the visual learners.

Learning and Instructional Strategies

In this lesson plan there was only one learning strategy presented. The weakness of this

lesson plan is that the teacher does not offer any virtual math manipulatives for the students to
use to help them solve problems. I know in my virtual classroom we are constantly using these

and it has helped my students tremendously.

Technology

The teacher is utilizing the envisions math lesson to teacher her lesson. It is an online

program that replicates the students math workbook. The only weakness I see about this part is

that there is no educational websites where the students can do extension activities. This could be

a great way to have students practice math skills for a bit longer while playing games. Lastly,

having technology-based learning can help to promote student centered learning (Edutopia,

2007).

Informal and Formal Assessment

A strength I notice for an informal assessment is the teacher has various questions listed

to ask her students in order to check for understanding. She has the students utilizing the "chat"

feature on zoom to type in their answers. This is a great time where the teacher can write down

quick notes about specific students that need further support. A weakness I see is there does not

to be any formal assessments given.

Part B: Coaching the Teacher

Reinforcement

The greatest highlight I can see in this lesson plan is the teacher has a structure to follow

and seems to be consistent during each math lessons. I know from experience that students like

to be in a routine so they can prepare themselves for what is to come. The way the math lesson is

laid out, the students are always beginning with a solve/share, then starting their guided practice,

and ending with their independent practice.

Refinement
I think that the teacher should focus on incorporating more online learning games for the

students. Since it appears that this teaching is teaching all her lessons through zoom it would be a

nice addition to provide the students with math games they can do when they have extra time.

This can also give extra support and practice to the students that are struggling with basic math

skills.

Strategy

Online math games can be extremely beneficial to students and make learning fun for

them at home. Game-based math learning can help to boost student's ability to reason and push

through complex math problems (Duncan, n.d.). Additionally Duncan states, "The goal for

educators is to continue finding and facilitating the kind of instructional activities that help

students understand the concepts behind the math problems—games that motivate them to find

creative solutions and take an active part in accelerating their own learning." Students can be

having fun with these games but also learning without even realizing it.
