Components in a Circuit

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Look around your house. How many appliances do you have?

How many are currently plugged in to your wall outlets?
Most households have several devices that makes use of electricity. The number of appliances
that you have at home shows how important electricity is in our everyday lives.
How does electricity flow to your appliances? Two conditions must be met in order for
electricity to flow: first, there must be a source of electricity; second, there must be a complete
path for the electricity to flow through.
What are the components of this complete path?

The picture above shows an electrical circuit. An electrical circuit has four parts: a source,
light bulb, wires, and switch.
In the setup, a wire is attached to the negative end of the battery, while the other wire is
attached to the positive end. Both wires are attached to the bulb. Such a circuit is called a closed
circuit.
A closed circuit makes the bulb light up because the path of electricity is complete,
allowing electricity to flow through it. Electricity flows from the negative to the positive
terminal of the dry cell.
Another kind of circuit is an open circuit. Electricity does not flow in this kind of circuit
because there is a gap or no complete path from one end of the circuit to the other end.
So what makes a circuit open? The switches that you see around your homes are electrical
components that can make the circuits of the lights in our homes open or closed. So to turn on
the lights, you have to close the circuit by pushing the switch on. To turn off the lights, you
have to open the circuit by pushing the switch off.

Other than switches, other causes of gaps or break in an open circuit include drained,
rusty, or mispositioned batteries wherein similar end are connected; busted bulb; and misplaced
bulb.

LEARNING COMPETENCY- STEM Approach

Determine the effects of changing the number or a type of components in a circuit

(Week 5-S5FE-IIIg-7)

LEARNING ACTIVITY 1: BRIGHT OR DIM

DIRECTIONS/INSRUCTIONS:

1. Look and study the Set up A and Set up B.

2. Label the components of each Set up.
3. Identify which setup gives dim light and which setup gives bright light.

Setup A

Note: Battery in
Setup A is 1.5V each

Setup B

Note: Battery in
Set up B is 3V each

LEARNING ACTIVITY 2: LIGHT IT UP!

DIRECTIONS/INSTRUCTIONS

 In this activity, you are going to learn and understand on how to find out the effects of
changing the number of components in a circuit. It will help you to fix if there is a simple
short circuit at your home
 Be careful in doing the activity especially handling the light bulbs.Seek the help of elders if
needed.

1. Prepare 4 small light bulbs,2 pieces long coiled wire(12inces) ,2 pieces short wire( 6 inches)
battery (2 pieces 1.5V, 2 pieces 3V), electrical tape.
2. Create the circuit.
3. Identify or label the components of the circuit you are going to use.

PROCEDURE
Note: Be careful in handling the materials especially the bulbs
A. See what happen

1. Replace the 1.5V with 3V battery.

2. Add one more 3V battery to the circuit.
3. Using 1.5V battery, make a circuit with 3 bulbs.
4. Make a circuit with 2 bulbs and 3V battery that can be turn on and off.
5. Swap the wire for a longer wire if you used short wire if you used short.
