    The French Revolution began in 1789 as tensions grew between the three estates of French society - the First Estate (clergy), Second Estate (nobility), and Third Estate (commoners). The Third Estate resented that the First and Second Estates owned most of the land but were exempted from paying most taxes. France was also deeply in debt. In response, King Louis XVI called the Estates-General, an assembly of representatives from the three estates, to propose solutions. However, the Third Estate formed into a new assembly called the National Assembly and took an oath not to disband until a new constitution was written. This sparked the beginning of the French Revolution.
