1.0 Preparing the Probe for Firmware Update


1.1 Getting Ready
NOTE
It is important to ensure that both the Tablet/Laptop and the Probe are fully charged before a
Firmware update. Recharge the battery of the Probe before making an update. Refer to the Probe
Charger section in your Insulator Tester User Manual. Ensure that the Tablet/Laptop is also fully
charged.
Next, on the Tablet/Laptop, select the Windows Menu key and locate Settings to ensure
that the WIFI of the Tablet/Laptop is on, enter the password of the selected WIFI router (if required)
and try to access any sites on the Internet to ascertain that connection to the Internet has been
enabled.

1.2 Locating the Switches and Serial Port


The Power Switch Cover is located in virtually the same place on all Positron Insulator Testers.
See Figure 1. Remove the Power Switch Cover, exposing the Power Switch Compartment. The
Power Switch, Serial Port, and Update Switch are found here.

1.3 Setting the Insulator Tester for a Firmware UPDATE


See Figure 2. Using the point of a pencil or a bent-open paper clip, move the UPDATE SWITCH
from the OPERATION position to the UPDATE position.

2.0 The Firmware Update Process


2.1 Using the Firmware Update Receive Software
After having communicated with Positron and provided the required information regarding the
Insulator Tester to be updated, including Model Number, Serial Number, and current Firmware
Revision level of the Insulator Tester, the Receive Firmware Update Software will have been
emailed to you by Positron. To check the revision
Ensure that you have saved the Receive Firmware Update Software to a folder on your
Tablet/Laptop.
Refer to Figure 3. On the Tablet/Laptop, locate the Receive Firmware Update Software. Highlight
and double click the icon or, on the touch screen, double-tap the icon.
After having scheduled a direct telephone contact appointment with Positron in advance, establish
direct telephone contact with Positron at the scheduled time at + 1 514 345 2220, Option 9, Option 3,
Option 1.

2.2 Switching the Power ON


See Figure 4. With the UPDATE Switch now moved to the LEFT-most position, the long-range
Bluetooth Transmitter set for DCE and inserted into the Serial Port of the Insulator Tester, .move the
POWER SWITCH from the OFF position to the ON position. The Probe is now ready for a remote
NOTE firmware update.

With the UPDATE Switch in the UPDATE position (see Section 1.3), the CPU of the Insulator Tester
will emit a continuous tone until silenced using the Receive Firmware Update Software.

2.3 The Firmware Update Process

With the Insulator Tester prepared and


switched on select the Serial Port button to
select the COM Port associated with the
Bluetooth Transmitter of the Tablet/Laptop.

NOTE During this process, the CPU of the Insulator


Tester will emit a continuous tone until silenced
using the Receive Firmware Update
Software. The Sound Off button will become
available once the COM Port is connected.

After selecting the Serial Port button, the Bluetooth Serial Port
dialogue box will open. Select the COM PORT associated with
the paired Bluetooth dongle and Tablet/Laptop. In this example,
the COM PORT is COM8.

Select COM8 and select ON-OFF. The status indicator will


change from RED (OFF) to YELLOW (Wait) while contact is
established.

If for any reason connection to the serial port fails, select Close.

This will return you to the Firmware Update RX screen dialogue


box. Select Serial Port again to proceed.

Once the COM PORT has been selected, The


Sound OFF button will become available. Select
this button to turn the Insulator Tester’s sound
OFF.

Once the Sound OFF button is selected:


 the continuous tone emitted by the Insulator
Tester will end,
 a check mark will appear in the box indicator of
the Probe connected dialogue, and
 the COM PORT selected will also now be added.

Now to establish connection with Positron, select


Connect.

After selecting Connect, a check mark will appear


in the box indicator of the Connected dialog
indicating connection to “the Cloud”.

The Connect button will change to BEEP.


Select BEEP. This will send a signal to the remote
computer attendant at Positron.

If “Please call Positron” is displayed in the dialog


screen, contact Positron at + 1 514 345 2220,
Option 9, Option 3, Option 1.

Positron will respond and send a communicating


BEEP, and a check mark will appear in the box
indicator of the Communicating dialog indicating
connection to Positron.

Use Check Probe to display the Probe connection


status at both locations: TX (Positron) and you (RX).

If all three boxes contain check marks, all is set up


correctly for the Firmware update from Positron.

While on the telephone line with you, Positron will


initiate the Firmware File Transfer.

Once the Firmware file transfer has begun, the


green Status bar will start, marking transfer
progress.

Once the file transfer is complete, you will see a confirming


message stating “Successful Update” Select OK to close.

Lastly, you will be returned to the main dialogue of


the Firmware Update Receive Software. You will
then see a note stating “End of successful update”
and then instructing you to:
 select the Exit button,
 switch the power off from the Probe and
 with a bent open paper clip, move the Update
Switch of the Probe again to the right-most
position, per Figure 5.

Referring to your User Manual for the particular Insulator Tester, please see the section Get
Revision of the Probe to see the new Firmware version downloaded to your Insulator Tester.

After the update, turn OFF the WIFI on the Tablet/Laptop to avoid interference with the long range
Bluetooth receiver while using the Insulator Tester in the field.
