Purpose of Research:

To be able to study and analyze the different architectural aspects of the airports.

Introduction:

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), from 2016 to the present, Ninoy
Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is number one the statistics they made in identifying the busiest
airports in the Philippines in terms of passenger traffic while Clark International Airport comes in fourth.

With both Airports filled with passengers every day, it is important to take into consideration, the
comfort level and safety of the passengers around the airport while they wait to board their flight.
Architecture is a big part of achieving that comfort and safety for the passengers. It does not only
provide the aesthetics for the structure but also helps the users walk their way around the building with
no trouble in navigating where they want to go.

This research will help in identifying the strength and weaknesses of both NAIA and Clark, as well
as help identify the different spaces needed inside the airport and the ideal site to build an airport.

NAIA terminals 1 and 2 showcases two different sides of the Philippines. Terminal 1 has a vision
of what Martial Law’s past is while Terminal 2 showcases what the Philippines could become with
technology and modernity. Because of the modernity of Terminal 2, most of the passengers prefer its
interiors rather than Terminal 1 and its constant reminder of life during the Martial Law.

In 2013 Kenneth Cobonpue was assigned to design the interiors on NAIA Terminal 1 that would
showcase Philippine contemporary elements, getting rid of the remaining memories of Martial Law.

There are four terminals in NAIA which all caters to both domestic and international flights except
for Terminal 4 which only caters to domestic flights and is the oldest terminal in NAIA being built on
1948.

Clark International Airport (CIA)
Clark, formerly known as Diosdado Macapagal International Airport is one of the busiest airports
in the Philippines. Numerous proposals for expansion has come up with one already completed by
Filipino engineering and infrastructure firm Megawide Construction Corporation to be fully operational
by June 2021.

The new 100,000-square-meter terminal will be able to accommodate 8 million passengers

annually which would give CIA a total of capacity of 12 million. The new façade also pays homages to
Mt. Arayat which is only 16 kilometers away from the airport and Philippine’s largest mountain range,
Sierra Madre.

According to Populous Senior Principal, Brett Wightman, the design of the new terminal focuses
on giving the passengers a look at Pampanga's cultural heritage, even hanging different festive lanterns
on the ceiling for the passengers to appreciate.

Ideal site for Airports:

Choosing an ideal site to construct and airport could go on a span of months or even years. The
basic requirement for the site is it should be a sufficiently large amount of flat land enough to
accommodate runways and all the other necessities needed in an airport.

It should also be relatively close to a populated area where the passengers could have easy
access to. On the other hand, it should also be far enough from the urban areas to avoid loud
unnecessary noise that may disturb the passengers.

Also, the wind condition and visibility on the site is heavily assessed during the process of
selecting the site as to avoid disturbance during take-offs.
