A Tribute to Patrick Nakata Sensei

EMPTY HAND KATA Pat Nakata Sensei was born in the Palama neighborhood of
• Kihon Kata: Shodan, Nidan, Sandan - OSKA Honolulu on October 14, 1944. In 1958, he began training in Wado Ryu
• Nijushiho – Minakami Dojo karate under Walter Nishioka Sensei. He was awarded his black belt in
• Tensho – Kyokushin 1960, and after graduating Roosevelt High School in 1962, he embarked
• Naihanchi Kata: Shodan, Nidan, Sandan - OSKA on a training trip to Japan with Nishioka Sensei. There, he primarily
• Rohai – Hikari Dojo trained at Nichidai and Meiji University.
• Wansu – IKL
• Seisan – Zentokukai He then went to Okinawa where he was introduced to Chibana Chosin
• Pinan Kata: Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan - OSKA

• Chinto - OSKA Also in 1964, Chibana Sensei granted him a Shihan no Menjo, or teaching
certificate, formally presenting it to him when he returned to Okinawa
WEAPONS KATA in 1965. This conferred a level of seniority, having previously only been
• Maezato no Tekko - RKHSH awarded to four of Chibana Sensei’s top students. He also trained in
• Choun no Kon – Minakami Dojo the bo and sai directly under Kyan Sensei during this time period and
• Maezato no Nunchaku - RKHSH returned to Hawaii in 1965. By this time, Nagaishi Sensei would also
• Bo no Kata Sho - RKHSH instruct Nakata Sensei and other students in Ryukyu Kobudo. Nakata
• Bo no Kata Dai - RKHSH Sensei was awarded his nanadan (7th degree black belt) in Shorin Ryu in
• Shiromatsu no Kun - IKL 1968 and maintained close contact with Chibana Sensei until his passing
• Shushi no Kon Sho - RKHSH
in 1969.
• Shushi no Kon Dai - RKHSH
• Shuji nu Kun - Hikari Dojo
Over the years, Nakata Sensei has been heavily involved in the Hawaii
• Tsuken Sunakake no Eiku – RKHSH
• Sai no Kata Sho - RKHSH karate community. He served as president of the Hawaii Karate Congress
• Sai no Kata Dai - RKHSH and the Hawaii Karate Kodanshakai, and was a founding member of the
• Ufushiku no Sai – Zentokukai Hawaii Karate Kenkyukai. He has supported tournaments, exhibitions,
• Kanegawa no Timbei - RKHSH and lectures, and his experiences have been an invaluable contribution to
• Maesato no Sai - Kenshukan karate literature, including interviews and articles published in Classical
• Kojo no Sai - RKHSH Fighting Arts, Black Belt Magazine, and various online venues.
• Hamahiga no Tunfa - RKHSH
• Hamahiga no Tunfa - Senbukan Dojo After over five decades of karate friendship, fellowship, and mentorship,
• Kanegawa no Nichogama- RKHSH Nakata Sensei passed away on Feb 7, 2013.
