Light Rays and Rectilinear Propagation Notes

This document discusses how light rays travel in straight lines and provides evidence from shadows, eclipses, and pinhole cameras. It includes diagrams of light rays showing how shadows are formed from a point source of light, lunar eclipse, and solar eclipse. The document also describes how images are formed in a pinhole camera and the effects of changing the size of the hole, distance of the object, and depth of the camera.

LIGHT RAYS AND RECTILINEAR PROPAGATION

A ray of light is a narrow beam of parallel light which can be drawn as a single line on a
diagram. Rays are drawn with an arrow on them to show direction of travel.

A ray of light is the direction in which light propagates.

A beam of light is a stream of light energy.
EVIDENCE THAT LIGHT TRAVELS IN A STRAIGHT LINE
 Formation of shadows
 Eclipse of the Moon
 Eclipse of the sun
 A pinhole camera

a. The camera is focusing an image of an object
b. The effect on the image of increasing the size of the hole
c. The effect on the image of moving the object further from the camera
