Multiplexing-Practice Problems DCCN

This document contains 5 practice problems related to frequency-division multiplexing (FDM) of voice channels. The problems calculate the minimum bandwidth needed for multiplexing a given number of channels with specific bandwidths and guard band frequencies. They ask the user to determine bandwidths in MHz, kHz, and the bit/Hz ratio needed without guard bands for 100 digitized voice channels in a 20 kHz pass-band channel. The final problem asks the user to find the overhead bandwidth for guard bands or control in different hierarchy levels of an analog network.

Practice Problems

1. Eleven channels, each with a 120 KHz bandwidth, are to be multiplexed together. What is the
minimum bandwidth of the link if there is a need for a guard band of 15 KHz between the
channels to prevent interference? Answer should be expressed in MHz.

2. Assume that a voice channel occupies a bandwidth of 4 kHz. We need to multiplex 10 voice
channels with guard bands of 500 Hz using FDM. Calculate the required bandwidth.

3. What is the required bandwidth if there are a 10 voice channels of 4KHz multiplex together
with guard bands of 50 Hz using FDM?

4. We need to transmit 100 digitized voice channels using a pass-band channel of 20 KHz. What
should be the ratio of bits/Hz if we use no guard band?

5. In the analog hierarchy of Figure 6.9 (follow the sides of chapter 6), find the overhead (extra
bandwidth for guard band or control) in each hierarchy level (group, super-group, master
group, and jumbo group).
