Multiplication of Monomial To Polynomial

This document discusses multiplying a monomial to a polynomial by using the distributive property. It provides examples of multiplying a monomial to a binomial and trinomial. For each example, students are instructed to apply the distributive property to distribute the monomial to each term in the polynomial, then combine like terms to get the final answer. The document emphasizes that multiplying monomials to polynomials involves using the distributive property.

SESSION 5

MULTIPLICATION OF MONOMIAL TO POLYNOMIAL

HOOK

Review:

1. -4x2 ● 3x5 = -12x7

2. -8x3y4 ● 7x2y = -56x5y5

3. 3x2 ● -2x4 ● 5x = -30x7

On the previous lesson, we discussed about the three laws of exponent and multiplication of monomial
to another monomial. How about if we will now multiply a monomial to binomial? trinomial? or polynomial?
That will be the focus of our discussion for this session.

ENGAGE

Let us recall the properties of real number. One of the properties of real number is DISTRIBUTIVE
PROPERTY. On this property, multiplication distributes over addition or subtraction.
On multiplying monomial to polynomial, we will apply the distributive property to get the final answer.

Example 1:

2 ( 4x + 6 )

2(4x) + 2(6)

8x + 12

Example 2:

9x ( 2x2 + 5x – 3 )

9x (2x2) + 9x (5x) – 9x(3)

18x3 + 45x2 – 27x
