ABSTRACT:
This project is used to collect data regarding Diabetes Mellitus (causes, factors, remedied) in
Pakistan and globally by reading several articles and self-observing data from the region. We
surveyed and got data of more than 20 people. Many people are diabetic patients and few are
non-diabetic means they are maintaining their health by exercise or proper diet.

INTRODUCTION:

Diabetes Mellitus is the leading cause of death, morbidity, and mortality not only in Pakistan but also
globally due to its relation with cardiovascular disorders. It has been observed through several surveys
and articles that the incidence of both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is increasing especially
the Type 2 and this disease is more common in:

Developed areas than Non-Developed areas:

Diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death in most developed nations. A significant epidemic of
diabetes is present in the South Asian region, with a rapid increase in the prevalence over the last two
decades, it is the second most populous IDF region after the Western Pacific Region.

Urban areas then Rural areas:

According to various population-based studies and national surveys, the overall ratio of DM is about
28.3% in urban and 28.3% in rural areas according to the recent survey held in 2016-2017 by the
second National diabetes survey of Pakistan (second NDSP). Overall, glycaemia dysregulation
(diabetes plus pre-diabetes) was reported to be 22.04% & 17.15% in urban and rural areas
respectively, by the 1st NDSP.

Children then Adults:

According to our survey there is 6.3% childerns are affected by DM than adults that’s why
PAKISTAN is the 7th highest rank in the rate of diabetes mellitus.Type 1 diabetes has been typically
viewed as a disease of childhood and adolescence as it accounts for more than 85 per cent
of diabetes in under 20s. But type 1 cases are harder to recognise and correctly diagnose
in adults because far more people develop type 2 diabetes in later life. There is a huge growth in cases
of type 2 diabetes among children, and it has a much more wicked flavor than it has in adults. It is a
much more aggressive disease in children, leading to earlier complications. Some experts believe that
many children who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes will pre-decease their parents. This is why one
of the greatest health threats facing the nation is the obesity epidemic in children.

Man then Women:

The pattern of DM prevalence is as follows: Punjab; male, 16.6%, female, 19.3%, Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa; 11.1% both sexes, Baluchistan; 10.8% both sexes, Sindh; male 16.2% female 11.7%.

Now then Past

According to the current statistics of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), it has been projected
that approximately1 in 11 adults (415 million) has diabetes and is expected to reach 1 in 10 adults
(642 million) by
2040.
Statistically, the prevalence of DM in Pakistan is high; ranging from7.6% (5.2 million populace) to
11% in 2011, it is estimated to reach 15% (14 million) by 2030.
This places Pakistan at number 7 in the list of countries with a prevalence of DM, and, if the present
situation continues, is expected to move to 4th Place.

METHODS:

We read several articles, books to collect data regarding diabetes. Diagnosed diabetes status was
determined from self-reported information provided by survey. Undiagnosed diabetes was determined
by measured fasting plasma glucose. For some measures, estimates were not available for certain
racial and ethnic subgroups due to small size.
Determining statistically significant differences between groups.
Age-adjusted estimates were calculated among adults aged 18 years or older by the direct method,
using age groups 20–30, 30–40, 40-50, 50-60, 60-70, 70-80 years or older.
Different parameters we have taken for differentiation. These are as follow:

 AGE
 HEIGHT
 GENDER
 WEIGHT
 BMI( Healthy, Over-Weight, Under-Weight)
 GLUCOSE-SUGAR LEVEL

Most estimates of diabetes in this report do not differentiate between type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
However, as type 2 diabetes accounts for 90% to 95% of all diabetes cases, the data presented here
are more likely to be characteristic of type 2 diabetes.

CAUSING FACTORS OF DIABETES MALLITEUS:

i. Heavy Urbanization & Unhealthy Life Styles:
Heavy environmental pollution, heavy industrialization and scientific developments have led to the
addition of detrimental chemicals to the environment in the form of heavy metals, agrochemicals,
pesticides and hydrocarbons which are degrading the body cells and insulin production for glucose
uptake.
AESENIC AND PESTICIDES LEVEL: Arsenic has major role to increase the diabetic rate in
several provinces of Pakistan. In Sindh 36% people are diabetic due to drinking water and
vegetables have high concentration of As above the WHO Limit., Punjab has normal WHO As
level in drinking water (20% are As diabetic), KPK has also As above safe WHO limit. Studies
about the presence of as prevalence in Baluchistan province are limited. However, some studies
have reported the presence of as within the range of permissible limits of WHO in some selected
districts.
ii. Smoking:
• 21.6% were tobacco users based on self-report or levels of serum cotinine.
• 15.0% reported current cigarette smoking.
• 36.4% had quit smoking but had a history of smoking at least 100 cigarettes in their lifetime.
iii. Overweight and Obesity
 89.0% were overweight or had obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 25 kg/m2 or
higher. Specifically:
 27.6% were overweight (BMI of 25.0 to 29.9 kg/m2).
 45.8% had obesity (BMI of 30.0 to 39.9 kg/m2).
 15.5% had extreme obesity (BMI of 40.0 kg/m2 or higher).
iv. Physical Inactivity
• 38.0% were physically inactive, defined as getting less than 10 minutes a week of moderate or
vigorous activity in each physical activity category of work, leisure time, and transportation.
v. High Blood Pressure
• 68.4% had a systolic blood pressure of 140 mmHg or higher or diastolic blood pressure of 90
mmHg or higher or were on prescription medication for their high blood pressure.
vi. High Cholesterol*
• 43.5% had a non-HDL level of 130 mg/dL or higher.
• 22.4% had a non-HDL level of 130 to 159 mg/dL.
• 11.2% had a non-HDL level of 160 to 189 mg/dL.
• 9.9% had a non-HDL level of 190 mg/dL or higher.

IMPACT ON BODY:
 Blindness
 Renal Failure
 Amputation

HEALTH REMEDIES TO OVERCOME DIABETES:

 AWARENESS
This disease can be controlled at great extent by aggressively spreading its causing factors like lack
of exercise and intake of fatty diets to general public who mostly are illiterate and have poor
knowledge about DM, prevention is better than treatment.
This can be done through:
 Publication of easily understandable Booklets
 Advertisements on TV, Newspapers and social medias in local languages
 Public discussions or lectures

RESULTS:
*WE HAVE SHOWED RESULTS ON THE BASES OF DATA THAT IS ABOUT
50-52 PERSONS*

 Prevalence of Diabetes (Undiagnosed And Prediabetes)

 An estimated 50-55% adults had diagnosed non-diabetic but few are Pre-diabetic.
 A higher percentage of men than women had prediabetes.

 Prevalence of Diagnosed Diabetes

 An estimated 45-50% adults had diagnosed diabetes according to our survey.
 Adults aged 20 or older diagnosed diabetes - reported both having type 1 diabetes and using
insulin.

FINAL RESULT:
From our survey and observation we come to know that people with Diabetes 2 are more common in
people who live in developed, polluted, and urban areas. The percentage is more in males and children.
Moreover the diabetic people have co related disease especially have blood pressure, renal, blindness
and cardiovascular diseases.
