2019 Spring Dynamics Final Term

This document is an examination for a course on structural dynamics and earthquake engineering. It contains 5 sections with multiple questions in each section. The questions cover a range of topics including: the difference between center of mass and center of rigidity; calculating natural time periods and equations of motion for structures; types of damped systems and how damage affects damping and time periods; constructing response spectra from accelerograms; ductility demand and capacity of elastoplastic systems; modal and response spectrum analysis methods; and using these methods to analyze shear buildings. Diagrams and graphs are provided to support the theoretical questions.

INTRODUCTION TO STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS & EARTHQUAKE ENGG: CE 412

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGG., (Jalozai Campus), UET PESHAWAR

Final Term examination, 8th semester, Spring 2019 semester: Duration=3 hours.
ATTEMPT ALL THE QUESTIONS. SUPPORT THE THEORTICAL DISCUSSION WITH
APPROPRIATE FIGURES/GRAPHS WHERE NECESSARY.
I

(a) Differentiate between centre of mass and centre of rigidity. With the help of a diagram discuss
their significance in seismic performance of a structure? (CLO1)
(b) A body with a weight W= 1000 lb is placed at the tip of cantilever beam which rest on the
midpoint of a simply supported beam as shown in Figure 1. Compute the natural time period
of the system and develop the equation of motion for undamped free vibration in the vertical
direction. Take E=29,000 ksi and I = 200 in4 (CLO2) 8+12 Marks

II
(a) Explain various types of damped systems. A structure experience damages due to an
earthquake, discuss the effect of these damages on damping and time period of structure?
(CLO1)
(b) Cork pads, each with a stiffness of 6x10 5 N/m, are used to isolate a 40-kg machine tool from
its foundation. The machine tool operates at 1400 rpm and produces a harmonic force of
magnitude 80,000 N in vertical direction. Calculate number of required cork pads, placed in
series, such that the force transmitted to foundation does not exceed 10,000 N. The damping
ratio of cork pads is 0.2. (CLO2) 8+14
Marks

III
(a) Discuss the step by step procedure for constructing deformation, Pseudo velocity and Pseudo
acceleration response spectra from a given accelerogram. (CLO1)
(b) A full water tank is supported on a cantilever tower. It is idealized as an SDF system with
weight w = 125 kips, lateral stiffness = 5 kips/in., and damping ratio ζ = 5%. The tower
supporting the tank is to be designed for ground motion characterized by the design spectrum
of Figure 2 scaled to 0.3g peak ground acceleration. Calculate the design values of lateral
deformation and base shear. (CLO3) 8+12 Marks
IV
(a) Differentiate between ductility demand and ductility capacity of an elastoplastic system?
(CLO1)
(b) A 12 ft high, single story RC structure is idealized as an elasoplastic SDOF system. The
design guidelines recommend that maximum drift ratio in the structure shall not exceed 2%
during design earthquake. Analyze the structural system to check that whether the

displacement in structural system will be within safe limit or not when it is subjected to
PGA = 0.3 g. Elastic stiffness of story is 250k/in and weight of the floor system is 80 k.
Take fy=0.2w and ζ=5% . Use elastic design spectrum shown in Figure 2 scaled to a PGA
of 0.3g (CLO3) 6+12 Marks

V
(a) Differentiate between (i) Response history and Response spectrum and (ii) Modal analysis
and Modal Response spectrum analysis (CLO1)
(b) Compute the fundamental time period of shear building shown in Figure 3 using Modified
Rayleigh’s method. Also calculate lateral forces at each floor of the frame for fundamental
mode using Response spectrum analysis method. Use design spectra shown in Figure 2, scaled
for PGA= 0.3 g
(CLO3)
