2016 Fall Dynamics Final Term

This document contains instructions for a final exam in structural dynamics and earthquake engineering. It includes 4 questions covering topics such as: 1) Determining effective earthquake force in single-degree-of-freedom systems and designing columns for lateral deformation and bending moment. 2) Distinguishing ductility demand and capacity, and checking displacement limits. 3) Differentiating between response history and response spectrum analyses. 4) Performing modal response spectrum analysis to determine nodal forces for a shear frame. Students are directed to support theoretical discussions with sketches and solve all questions.

INTRODUCTION TO STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS & EARTHQUAKE ENGG: CE 412

Department Of Civil Engg, UET Peshawar, Main Campus

Final term examination, 7th semester Fall 2016 semester: Duration=2 ¼ hours.

ATTEMPT ALL THE QUESTIONS. SUPPORT THE THEORTICAL DISCUSSION WITH

APPROPRIATE SKECTHES.

I (a) What is Effective earthquake Force? Derive an expression for determining Effective
earthquake Force in SDOF systems subjected to base excitation.

(b) A single-story R.C. frame is idealized for structural analysis as a massless frame supporting a
total dead load of 15,000 lb at the beam level. The structure is supported on two columns, both
of which have cross-sectional area of 15″ * 15″ and have fixed- ended bases. The heights of
columns are 15 ft and 10 ft. If the building is to be designed for the design spectrum of Figure
1 scaled to PGA of 0.3g, determine the design values of lateral deformation and bending
moment in the columns. Assume that the beam is too stiff as compared to connected columns.
Take Econc= 3*106 psi and ζ =5% (10+20)
II
(a) Differentiate between ductility demand and ductility capacity of an elastoplastic system?
(b) A 12 ft high, single story RC structure is idealized as an elasoplastic SDOF system. The design
guidelines recommend that maximum drift ratio in the structure shall not exceed 2% during
design earthquake. Check that whether the displacement in structural system will be within safe
limit or not when it is subjected to PGA = 0.3 g. Elastic stiffness of story is 250k/in and weight
of the floor system is 80 k. Take fy=0.2w and ζ=5% . Use elastic design spectrum shown in
Figure 1 scaled to a PGA of 0.3g (9+16)

III (a) Differentiate between response history and response spectrum

(b) Differentiate between Modal analysis and Modal Response spectrum analysis (10+10)

IV Determine nodal forces for each mode for the shear frame shown in Figure 2 using Modal
response spectrum analysis method. Use design spectra shown in Figure 1, scaled for PGA= 0.3 g
