Consuming a healthy and balanced diet is compulsory part in order to maintain good health. A
healthy diet leads to a good physical and mental health, helps in proper growth, and strengthen
immunity. A balanced diet refer to a diet that contains an adequate amount of nutrients that we
require in a day. Generally, a healthy and balanced diet should include a wide variety of
nutritious foods intake at sufficient amount of all nutrients, including vitamins and minerals. A
healthy diet lowers the risk from many diet related chronic disease including cardiovascular
disease, obesity, diabetes, stroke and cancers.
A healthy and balanced diet should include the consumption of all six main classes of food at
suitable proportion. The intake of fats, protein, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins, minerals and
sufficient amount of water are very important in order to sustain a healthy lifestyle. We can
always refer the food pyramid as a guide in our meals taking. Carbohydrates are one of our
body’s main source of energy. Hence, it should be taken as our major dietary source. Rice,
bread, cereals and potatoes are choices of carbohydrates source we can take in our diet. Fruits
and vegetables are the primary sources of essential vitamins and minerals needed in our body
and should be taken in a large portion. Dark, leafy green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli
are rich in vitamins. In addition, fruits such as oranges, apples, pineapples and guavas should
also be consumed more. Vegetables and fruits are also rich in fibre which helps in prevents
constipation. Protein consumption is also essential in a healthy diet. Proteins are needed for
growth purpose and proper, muscle and brain development. It is commonly found in dairy
products and meat. Chicken, fish, milk and egg are always the best option for protein
consumption. Besides, nuts and beans such as peas, almond and walnut are also good sources
of protein. Soy based-products such as tofu and soya are excellent healthy alternatives to meat.
Oils and fats such as butter and cheese are recommend to consume in moderation. Processed
food, sugary drinks and salty food should be consumed with limitation to avoid any diet-related
disease.
A balanced diet should be practiced in our daily routine. A healthy and balanced diet can be
applied in our daily lives through several ways for a healthier lifestyle. Firstly, consume higher
portion of fruits and vegetables. Consume more dark green, leafy vegetables for meals and at
the same time add fresh fruits to meals as part of side dishes or dessert. This allow one to get
more vitamins, minerals and fibre the body needs to be healthy. Reduce the intake of fat, sugar
and salt which can cause several health disease when over consuming. Drink plain water
instead of sweetened beverages such as carbonated drinks. Also, avoid taking too much of
processed food such as junk food, pickled food which consists of high sugary or salty level.

Lean protein products will be an excellent option when it comes to protein consumption. Lean
meat will be more healthier and preferable as it has lower fat. Eggs, nuts and milk are also
classified as good protein alternatives. Other than that, one should always consume sufficient
amount of water especially during hot sunny weather to prevent from dehydration. We should
consume at least 8 glasses of plain water per day to ensure we have enough water in body.
An imbalanced diet supplies one with either excess or insufficient nutrients than the body needs.
Practicing an imbalanced diet in daily lives can develop into health problem. One of the common
effects of imbalanced diet is obesity. Obese means the unhealthy over gaining of weight due to
the imbalance between excess consumption of calories in diet and physical activity. Over
consuming of food that contains high calories such as deep fried food can leads to obesity.
Besides, excess gaining of weight and lack of exercises increase the risk of suffering in health
disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Insufficient intake of
minerals such as calcium especially in elderly can lead to osteoporosis and bone fractures. In
short, dietary factors contributes significantly to one’s health condition.
In conclusion, healthy diets are key to good nutrition and is necessary for a long and healthy life.
Eating nutritious food enables us to obtain enough nutrients that needed in our body.
Imbalanced consumption of food can lead to effect such as obese, diabetic, stroke and even
heart disease. Everyone should consume a healthy diet to maintain a healthy body.
