 Assess (v) (= to estimate or judge the quality or quantity): đánh giá, ước định

Eg: Can you assess my chances of winning?

 Assume (v)

1. = to take or accept as true: cho rằng, cho là

Eg: I assume that you’d like time to decide.

2. = to accept (authority, responsibility etc): đảm đương, gánh vác

Eg: He assumed the role of leader in the emergency.

 Baffle (v) = to cause someone to be completely unable to understand or explain

Eg: I think she’s beautiful but then I’m biased since she’s my daughter.

 Discriminate (v)

1. (+between) = to distinguish, tell the difference between: phân biệt

Eg: It’s difficult to discriminate between the two birds because they’re very similar
in appearance.

Eg: It is illegal to discriminate against someone because of their race.

 Dubious (a) = probably not honest: mập mờ, đáng ngờ

Phrasal verbs:
 Brush up (on): to practise and improve your skills or your knowledge of
something that you learned in the past: ôn lại kĩ năng

E.g. I must brush up on my French before I go to Paris.

 Come (a)round (to): to change your opinion so that you now agree with
someone or are no longer angry with them: thay đổi ý kiến, quan điểm

E.g. It took him a while to come around to the idea.

Eg: The new evidence has cast doubt on the guilty verdict.

 Beg the question: -> If a statement or situation begs the question, it causes you

 Raise a question: hỏi, đặt vấn đề

 Raise questions: = raise doubts, create doubts: dấy lên nghi ngờ

 Come to your senses: = to begin to use your good judgement: suy nghĩ thông

 Have/keep your wits about you: to think and react quickly when something
dangerous or difficult happens unexpectedly: phản ứng mau lẹ

E.g. She managed to keep her wits about her and escaped unharmed.

 In the dark (about): = to not know about sth that other people know: “tối cổ”
, không biết nhiều về vấn đề gì

E.g. “Do you know anything?” “No, I'm completely in the dark, like
everyone else.”

 Know what’s what: = to be experienced: người có kinh nghiệm, thâm niên


trong lĩnh vực nào đó

Eg: Linda’s been in the business for 30 years – she know what’s what.

 Not have a leg to stand on: không có căn cứ, bằng chứng,.. để chứng minh
điều gì đó
E.g. The State Department doesn't have a leg to stand on if it's going to
contradict its own analysis.

 Not see the wood/forest for the trees: không nhìn nhận sự việc một cách rõ
ràng

E.g. Many people can’t see the wood for the trees when talking bout joining
Eurozone; they just think about what’s on the notes and coins and don’t
think about the economic benefits.

 Put two and two together: = to guess the truth based on what one has seen or
heard; deduce: suy luận ra

E.g. "How did you know they were having an affair?" "I'd seen them out
together a couple of times, so I just put two and two together."

 Quick/slow on the uptake: sáng/tối dạ, nhanh/chậm hiểu

E.g. He's a little slow on the uptake, so you may have to repeat the
instructions a few times.

 Ring a bell (with sb): = to sound familiar: nghe quen quen :))

Eg: The name rang a bell but I couldn’t remember where I had heard it before.

 Split hairs: = to argue or worry about small details of sth: tranh cãi về
những vấn đề nhỏ nhặt, xét nét

E.g. Whether you call them ‘terrorists’ or ‘freedom fighters’ is just splitting
hairs – the point is that the’re killing people!

 Take stock of: dành thời gian nhìn lại, suy nghĩ về vấn đề gì trước khi quyết

E.g. Let’s take a couple of days to take stock of the situation and then we’ll
make a decision.

 Assumption (n)
