Scope of this document


This document describes how to proceed for updating the firmware of the BARBIERI
Spectrophotometers.
The firmware is the operating program of your Barbieri instrument and resides
internally on a Flash Eprom memory chip. The memory can be updated to a newer
firmware version by transferring the new program version from a Microsoft Windows
computer into the instrument.

Hardware and software needed
The following equipment is needed:
- Personal computer with Microsoft Windows operating system
- BARBIERI Profile-Xpert Gateway software
- USB or serial port connection cable
(instruments with serial number lower than A606xxx only work with serial port
connection cable!)
- Binary file supplied by BARBIERI electronic with the new firmware version to
be downloaded (Firmware.bin and/or bootrom.bin).
These files are also supplied together with the Gateway software and are
found in the Gateway program folder.

Installing and running the Profile-Xpert Gateway software on the computer:


Get the latest version of the Gateway software from the following web site to make
sure you have the latest firmware version:
www.profile-xpert.com

Run the Gateway Setup program to install it on the computer. See also the operating
manual of the software.

Programming the program memory
Follow these instructions for updating the firmware of your instrument:

Warning: Do not under any circumstance power off or restart the system during the
firmware update procedure.

- Switch on the instrument.

- Run the Gateway software and configure the connection with your instrument.

- When using Gateway version 2, click on the Icon on the left side in the title
bar. With Gateway version 3 choose the menu: Extras

- from the appearing menu choose “Firmware Update”.

- Confirm with “Yes” to enter firmware update.

- Select the new Firmware File (usually firmwarexxxx.bin) and confirm with
“Open”.

- You will be asked if you are sure to proceed. Confirm this message.

- The computer will start updating the flash memory block by block. The process
will take a few minutes.

- The operation is finished as soon as the dialog “Firmware Update successful”

Now, the updating of the instrument firmware is successfully finished.

Note: if the firmware update process is interrupted or fails, the instrument remains
without valid firmware. It then runs only in a special mode named “bootrom”
mode. When instrument is in this mode, please retry again to write the firmware
into the instrument.
You might see the message “instrument not connected” when starting the
Gateway software, but please go ahead with above firmware update instructions.

Re-setting instrument configuration
This procedure will re-set the configuration parameters of your instrument. A
configuration file specific to your device is needed to effect this operation.
The configuration file must be requested by BARBIERI electronic by specifying the
serial number of your instrument.

Note: use only the specific configuration file of your device supplied by BARBIERI
electronic. Using a different file will result in wrong functionality of your instrument!

- Switch on the instrument.

- Run the Gateway software and configure the connection with your instrument.

- When unsing Gateway version 2, click on the Icon on the left side in the title
bar. With Gateway version 3 choose the menu: Extras

- from the appearing menu choose “Extended Functions/ Download instrument


configuration file”.

- Choose the configuration file and press “Open” button

- A progress bar will now indicate that the configuration takes place. This
process will take a few minutes.
