What is CKD?
A silently evolving disease that involves damage to kidney's filtration apparatus thereby impacting
quality and eventually
considerably reduces urine output. Good News is its progress can be checked and stopped when
diagnosed early. Bad News is
it exhibits typical symptoms only in advanced stages when only interventional treatments like
dialysis and eventually renal transplant
Advancement in medicine with technology has made it possible to detect early , whatever problem
that has happened to the kidney. Tests like Urine microalbuminuria quantification, Serum creatinine
and eGFR values will pick the issue and guide us for prompt action to be taken. Hence, correcting the
renal issue at an early stage is possible through proactive approach.
Causes of CKD
Symptoms of CKD
Conrol of blood pressure and keeping a healthy diabetes profile forms the core of treatment. Drugs
to treat microalbuminuria and improvement of renal markers are given separately based on the
cause and condition. in advanced stages, dialysis becomes necessary and renal transplant becomes
the ultimate option.
Affordability of cost and accessibilty to dialysis centres are major challenges. Luckily many voluntary
organizations and government health centers do have dialysis centres with nominal charges if not
for free. On the other hand, dialysis as a procedure is time consuming and patient has to cancel
routine work. Higher the frequency of dialysis per week tougher it is for the patient. Nevertheless, if
not for dialysis, the mortaliy due to CKD would have increased manifold in India and across the
globe.
Importance of prevention
Painful advanced tratment modalities can be avered through early detection and corrective action.
Other complications of CKD, especially cardiac complaints will be avoided.
Ayurveda's understanding about role of Agni in digestion, separation of essence and excreta from
food, segregation of excreta into solid and liquid ( principally urine) by the impact of bhutagni
( specific metabolic process pertaining to five elements) form the basis of treating chronic kidney
disease. Advanced anatomical and functional descriptions of kidneys, nephrons, body fluids
maintenance are not available in existing Ayurveda literature. Ayurveda rather views the aspects of
qualitative and quantitative modifications in urine, food intake, skin appearnace, body changes in
relation to cause of the condition and constitution of the patient. Then treatment is initiated
through internal medications and certain expert Ayurveda physicians even administer medicated
decoction enema periodically to treat Chronic Kidney Disease.
Few patients buy over the counter herbal/ finished formulations or given prescribed drugs which act
as diuretics ( improve urine output). According to Ayurveda, Agni is impaired at the seggregation
level and hence diuretics will only further increase the load ( doesnt usually create problem in
earliest stage like microalbuminuria) . Instead of diuretics, Agni correction to restore or improve
seggregation process is more relevant in CKD.
Prevention can be achieved by practising unique aspects of Ayurveda like constitutional assessment,
tissue dominance detection and few modalities of ten fold examination. In early stages of CKD,
Ayurveda aids in improvement of renal functions, prevention of further progression of CKD and
relief from associated symptoms. Across different stages of CKD, Ayurveda treatment can be
complementary in terms of improvement in overall wellbeing of the patient. Medication through
Ayurveda is a long term process and duration or intensity depend on cause, constitution , diet
pattern and lifestyle of the individual.
We at GRACE, wish to participate actively in primary prevention, early detection and guidance to
sufferers of CKD. We would like to contribute as information centre for assisting patients in the best
way possible by connecting to experienced physicians, specialists and centres relevant to CKD. We
are into research on CKD and how Indian medicine systems like Ayurvea, Siddha can fulfill our
mission on CKD.
