LESSON 11
THE TENTH COMMANDMENT
Learning Objectives
- To identify and explain the Tenth
Commandment
- To elaborate the meaning of covetousness
- To point out happiness in simple life
through a story
STRENGTHENING FAITHFULLY
The lost two of the Ten Commandments are against coveting which aimed
directly at the heart and mind of every human being. The commandments would want
us to look deep within our selves of what is inside us.
The Tenth Commandment commands, “You shall not covet your neighbor’s
house” (Exodus 20:17). To covet means to desire or crave in an ordinate manner even
something which is not rightly ours. The focus of the Tenth
Commandment is the illicit desire for anything and for those things that IDOLATRY –
already belong to others. IS THE
WORSHIP OF
IDOLS OR
The root cause of coveting is selfishness, an excessive and EXCESSIVE
DEVOTION
exclusive concern for oneself. If not controlled, this desire can lead to TO, OR
conduct of immoralities. “All of us once lived among them un the REVERENCE
desires of our flesh, following the wishes of the flesh and the impulses, FOR SOME
PERSON OR
and we were by nature, children of wrath, like the rest” (Ephesians 2:3) THING.
ILLICIT –
MEANS
Covetousness is a serious sin. When greed is put at the center, UNLAWFUL
coveting can become idolatry. Paul warns us “Be sure of this, that no
immoral or impure or greedy person, that is an idolater, has any
inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God” (Ephesians 5:5)
Jesus said to the crowd “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may
be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions” to covet for the grace of God is
enough.
Covetousness is not easy to defeat. We need the help of God. We need to "live in
the Spirit". Paul writes "live by the Spirit and you will' certainly not gratify the desire
of the flesh. For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh;
1

these are opposed to each other, so that you may not do what you want" (Galatians 5:16
—17).
SHARING LOVINGLY
Read the story in Genesis. What is the pattern of sin based on the story? Why does it
lead to sin? Write the words hatred, murder, and envy in a correct order in the boxes
and then your conclusion in the blank. (10pts)
In the course of time Cain brought an offering to the Lord from the fruit of the ground,
while Abel, for his part, brought the fatty portion of the firstlings of his flock. The Lord
looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look
with favor. So Cain was very angry and dejected. Then the Lord said to Cain.' Why are
you angry? Why are you rejected? If you act rightly, you will be accepted; but if not, sin
lies in wait at the door: its urge is for you, yet you can rule over it. Cain said to his
brother Abel, '(Let us go out in the field." When they were in the field, Cain attacked his
brother Abel and killed him.

CHRISTTIAN SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Learning Objectives
- To discuss the three basics for
Christian Social responsibility
- To identify the importance of trust
in God to the call for social
responsibility
- To realize the influence of one
person to another through self-
reflection
STRENGTHENING FAITHFULLY
The Seventh and Tenth Commandments deal with our outward actions and
inner desires regarding possessions and social structure. To guide social relationships in
view of possessions that tempt people to be greedy, selfish, and indifferent to the needs
of the poor, the Gospels' give the basics for Christian social responsibility.
The first is reform. This is what John the Baptist preached and how he prepared
the people for the coming of the Messiah. “Reform your lives! The Reign of God is at
hand" (Matthew 3:2). The coming of the Messiah does not only mean to be saved by
Christ but for oneself to act avoiding evil and doing good. John reproved the tax
collectors: "Exact nothing over and above your fixed amount," and warned soldiers:
“don't bully anyone, denounce no One falsely, and be content with your pay" (Luke
3:12f). (cf. CFC 1155)
The second is conversion. Conversion comes from Greek
word "metanoia" which means “change of mind". It is a spiritual
conversion referring not only to outward actions but those from
RESTITUTION -
within, interior reform. Jesus said "No one can serve two
IS THE ACT OF
masters... You cannot give yourself to God and money" (Mt
GIVING BACK
6:24).
SOMETHING
The third is restitution. Jesus praised Zacchaeus who THAT HAS BEEN
reported, “If I have defrauded anyone in the least, I pay him LOST OR
back fourfold" (Luke 19:8), But this action was only part of the STOLEN
larger ideal of sharing with others that Zacchaeus had grasped
from Christ: "l give half my belongings, Lord, to the poor"
(Ibid.). (CFC 1155)
3
COMMANDMENTS 8
Behind reform, conversion and restitution was Jesus' call to basic trust in God.
“Ask and you will receive. Seek and you with will find. Knock and it will be opened to
you... If you, with all your sins, know how to give your children what is good, how
much more will your heavenly Father give good things to anyone who asks Him!"
(Matthew 7:7—11).
Today, financial stability and security are the main reasons for the effort and
time put in work, Hopefully, these reasons do not blind people to see the need of less
fortunate and less privileged people. Jesus calls everyone while working to trust in
God's providence. "Stop worrying over questions like, 'What are we to eat, or what are
we to drink, or what are we to wear?' (Matthew 6:31).

SOCIAL SINS AND STRUCTURES OF SIN
Learning Objectives
- To describe social sin and structures of sin
- To point out the root cause of social sin
and structures of sin
- To reflect and realize one's indirect
participation to social sin or structural sin
STRENGTHENING FAITHFULLY
Pride and selfishness can develop into habitual patterns that infect human
interaction. It hardens and becomes a sinful social structure that desensitizes people to
the needs of other people. Graft and corruption, scam, and human trafficking care for
no one except for oneself. ln the first letter of John, he said "l ask you, how can God's
love survive in a man who has enough of this world's goods yet closes his heart to his
brother when he sees him in need? Little children, let us
love in deed and in truth and not merely talk about it" (1
John 3:17—18).

HUMAN WORK
8
COMMANDMENTS 8
Learning Objectives
- To point out the Christian meaning of work based on the Gospel
- To discuss three important truths about work in relation to the worker
- To identify ways to be holy through the chosen profession/work
STRENGTHENING FAITHFULLY
Our understanding of private property leads us to understanding human work.
Human work is an activity of the human person. 'It is what he/she does to live, to
accomplish a task, or to contribute for the good of other people. However, human work
must be understood not only about its purpose (objective sense) but its meaning and
significance or implication to the person who does the work (subjective sense).
Work must be seen primarily in relation to the worker. This is expressed in
various ways.
Firstly, work is for people, not people for work. This is expressed by Jesus when
He said, "Sabbath is made for man, not man for the Sabbath" (Mark 2:27). People work
not for the work but for him/her and the others he/she works for. Works must all serve
"to realize his humanity, to fulfill the calling to be a person that is his by reason of his
very humanity" (LE 6).
Secondly, human work is to be prioritized over capital and profit. When priority
is placed on capital and profit, the dignity of the person and the value of his/her, work
are ignored. "The whole collection of means of production, remains a mere instrument
or instrumental cause. This principle is an evident truth that emerges from the whole of
man's historical experience" (LE 12).
Thirdly, persons are more important than products and services. Products and
services are good. They can be valued and used for the people but not over nor against
any human being. Every person has dignity rooted in God. He/she -is an image of God,
redeemed by the Son and sanctified by the Holy Spirit. There is nothing in this world
that can equal the worth of a person.

SOCIAL SINS AND STRUCTURES OF SIN
Learning Objectives
- To discuss Pope St. John Paul II’s message
about human work
- To show the interrelationship between
love and justice
10
COMMANDMENTS 8
STRENGTHENING FAITHFULLY
Human work is the key to promote social justice.
The different moral issues people face today require not only talks, arguments,
and debates but concrete action. It requires work for justice. St. John Paul II explained to
the, workers in Legazpi:
"Christ Himself immeasurably ennobled and sanctified all human work by his
work as a carpenter in Nazareth and by his many other labors, thus conferring
on workers a special solidarity with himself and giving them a share in his own
redemptive work" (John Paul II, Legazpi, 7); (CFC 1186)
The human work for justice is not some kind of activism driven by impatience or
anger but by love, the concrete expression of our Christian faith. This love is concretized
through act of justice for those people truly victims of abuse and oppression. Love
desires the good of the people. PCP II states: "While the demand for justice is implied in
love, still justice 'attains its inner fullness only in love.' For in justice, the other person
can remain 'another,' an alien. In love, the other is a friend, even a brother or sister in
Christ" (PCP II 305).
To gain justice does not mean to drop forgiveness and
to desire the good of the other person. When one seeks the
offender to be punished, true justice ensures the offender
receives the punishment/sanction that would lead him/her to

AND JUST
Building a just and humane society is a social RELATIONS
responsibility. People are called to respond and act on the BETWEEN THE
different concerns of the country whether economic, social, INDIVIDUAL AND
legislative, administrative, or cultural in order to promote the SOCIETY
common good. The Second Plenary Council of the Philippines
"stands on record to urge lay faithful to participate actively

and lead in renewing politics in accordance with the values of the Good News of Jesus"
(PCP II 350). This is a call for solidarity.
"Solidarity" stands for a "firm and persevering determination to commit oneself
to the common good, i.e., to the good of all and of each individual because we are really
responsible for all" (SRS 38).

Eight commandment
- To identify the importance of the value of
truthfulness
12
COMMANDMENTS 8
STRENGTHENING FAITHFULLY
The eighth commandment states, "You shall not bear false witness against your
neighbor." (Exodus 20:16; Deuteronomy 5:20).
By seeking and bearing true witness to the truth, we keep our relationship with
God the Truth (John 14:6), and we who speak truth from the heart abides with God
(Psalm Speaking the truth also shows our love toward our fellow man (Ephesians, 4:15).
Lies and deceit cause separation and distrust. Truth bears unity and trust.
In the Old Testament, concerns, problems, and decisions of the people were
referred to the whole: Those who violated a law were put in public trial. To bear false
witness against a neighbor is to lie against the whole. community. Truth is not a private
possession of anyone.
Prophets continued to remind, the people to speak the truth.
“You have cultivated wickedness, reaped perversity, and eaten the fruit of
falsehood." (Hosea 10:13)
“We have made lies our refuge and in falsehood we have found a hiding place."
(Isaiah 28:15)
“Your lips speak falsehood, and your tongues utter deceit. No one brings suit
justly, and no one. pleads truthfully" (Isaiah 59:3-4)
In the New Testament, we came to know who Jesus is as the Truth Himself and

this I came into the world, to testify to the truth.

CALL TO WITNESS THE TRUTH
Learning Objectives
- To explain the call to witness the truth
- To describe martyrdom as supreme
witness to the truth
STRENGTHENING FAITHFULLY
14
COMMANDMENTS 8
Jesus said, "For this I was born and for this I came into the world: to testify to
She truth" (John 18:37). As followers of Christ, they are called to testify to the truth.
They who proclaim Jesus' glorious triumph over sin and death share in the mission of
Christ to be witnesses to the truth. They listen to the voice of Christ, the Truth.
"Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice" (John 18:37).
"For all Christians, wherever they live, are bound to show forth, by the example
of their lives and by the witness of the word, that new man put on at baptism
and that power of the Holy Spirit by which, they have been strengthened at
Confirmation. (AG 11)
Martyrs are good examples of people who bear witness to the truth. The word
"witness" comes from the Greek word "martureo." "Martureo" means martyr. To be a
witness is to be a martyr.
"Martyrdom is the supreme witness given to the truth of the faith: it means
bearing witness even unto death (CCC 2473). The martyr's death is out of love for
Christ.
Today in society, people need to listen to the cry of the poor, oppressed, needy,
and discriminated. They have to open their eyes to the reality of sin and be not
indifferent to its evil consequences. They have to take courage to bear witness to Christ
through loving service to others.

CHURCH’S CALL AGAINST LYING
Learning Objectives
- To give reasons to condemn lying based on Church’s
teaching
- To realize the negative impact of lie to human
relationship
STRENGTHENING FAITHFULLY
18
COMMANDMENTS 8
The Church condemns lying. It is contrary to the very nature and purpose of
communication.
Truth is essential to human relationship. It enables members of the community to
relate positively and live harmoniously with each other. To lie is to deprive the
community of truth that encourages relationship, unites members, and strengthens
bond.
By its very nature, lying is to be condemned. It is a profanation of speech,...a
failure in justice and charity. The culpability is greater when the intention of deceiving
entails the risk of deadly consequences for those who are led astray. (CCC 2485)
Lying is to be condemned for many reasons:
a. Lying is contrary to who God is. "l am the truth." (John 14:6)
b. Lying is contrary to our identity as children of truth, called to "profess the truth
in love and grow to the full maturity of Christ the head." (Ephesians 4:15)
c. Lying is contrary to intellect which is directed toward the truth, and the will
which is directed toward what is good.
d. Lying is an abuse of speech and communication.
e. Lying is selfishness. Lying deprives others of the truth about themselves, world,
and God that they need in order to grow and develop as full persons.
f. Lying ruins basic human relationship. It
prevents relationship and hinders true
friendship from developing. "It undermines
trust among men and tears apart the fabric
of social relationships" (CCC 2486). CULPABILITY – MEANS
g. Lying is an injury against other people who BLAMEWORTHY,
