Intranets and Extranets

Intranets
An intranet is a private network based on Internet standards but only
available within a business or other organisations.

An intranet is not directly connected to the Internet, but some intranets do

allow access, via so-called gateway computers, to the Internet.

Larger businesses allow users within their intranet to access public internet
through firewall servers.

Intranets, may depending on how they are set up, consist of Local Area
Networks ( LANs ) and Wide Area Networks ( WANs ).

Intranets are used by many businesses and organisations to :

❀ - distribute documents
❀ - share information
❀ - distribute software
❀ - access databases
❀ - help with staff training
❀ - facilitate group work
❀ - enable teleconferencing

within that specific organisation.

Advantages of Intranets
✰-access to Internal and External information
✰ - improves communication
✰- increases collaboration
✰- supports links with customers and partners
✰- can capture and share knowledge

Disadvantages of Intranets
✰ - overabundance of information
✰ - information overload lowers productivity
✰ - users set up own web pages

N/B : When part of an intranet is made accessible to customers and

others outside the business, it becomes part of an extranet.

Extranets
Extranets allow authorised outsiders limited access to an Intranet.
Extranets enable businesses to work closely together.

An extranet could be used to share information not available to the public

as well as to exchange data and to develop joint training programmes.
Data can be exchanged using Electronic Data Interchange ( EDI ).
Electronic Data Interchange is a special way to transfer business
documents, such as orders and invoices, between computers.

Advantages of Extranets
✰-improved customer service
✰ - improved quality
✰ - better communication

Disadvantages of Extranets
✿- faceless contact
✿ - can be expensive
✿ - security can be concerned when hosting valuable proprietary
information.
