ACTIVITY 1:
JOURNAL TIME:
- As part of your activity, write an insight regarding the articles stated in the module.
This article was all about how literacy and being literate are important things to
our daily lives. I have learned that literacy and functional literacy has different
meanings. Based on this article, literacy is able to read, and write, however, it also says
that if a person is not good at something it doesn’t mean that he’s illiterate. I’ve learned
that literacy is not just about being able to read and write. Lot of people are talented
and have skills in different areas, like painting, drawing, singing, and many more. So if
a person is good at this aspect he/she is considered a literate person. I remember my
friend who’s not good at computing numbers, she literally hates Math, however, she is
really good in English. She can speak English fluently and even write English stories, so
by this we can consider that she’s still a literate person. I also see myself as a literate
person knowing that I can write poems even though I’m not good at other aspects.
On the other hand, this article also tackled Functional literacy. I’ve learned that
being literate is not enough to be an effective individual. We can need to apply this
literacy in our real-life situations. We need to solve real-life problems, evaluate, analyze,
or interpret the things that are happening around us to function effectively in our
community. I think this is a thing that people should focus on. As a matter of fact, the
Philippines always ranked as one of the lowest countries who have a poor
comprehension in reading. Meaning, people can read but do they understand what they
are reading? People can compute basic numbers but can they analyze charts, data?
That’s why in this article, I have learned so many things to improve myself, and to
function effectively. I have realized that it’s not always about your cognitive skills, or
how intelligent you are as a person, but it also tested how effectively you are if you can
apply all those literacy to your everyday lives.
Lastly, I’ve also learned what multicultural literacy is. It’s about the ability to
take different perspectives from different groups of people, and be able to respect it.
This literacy promotes empathy, unity, bridging the gaps, and respect diversity. If
people possess this literacy our community will become more united and at peace. I
remember the movement of the Black American/African people insisting that “Black
lives matter” it only shows that people must respect and accept differences with races,
ethnicity, backgrounds, and colors. If all the people are aware of what multicultural
literacy is, maybe they will understand why these people keep on protesting about their
rights. I have learned in this article that we are all human beings, and you are not
exempted from violence just because you are white or anything. People should accept
the fact that we are not the same, and should be literate when it comes to diversity.
