Compound Adjective
A compound adjective is when two or more words are combined to describe the
same noun. Since it is a combination of more than two words that functions as one
word, it has a hyphen.

Look at these examples to distinguish what makes a compound adjective.

Here are simple descriptions or Now, here are compound adjectives:


simple adjectives:
 short-haired girl
 good girl (adjective = good)
 good-mannered girl
 tall girl (adjective = tall)
 left-handed girl
 sweet girl (adjective = sweet)
Here are more sentences to help demonstrate what a compound adjective is:

1) A Chinese who speaks English  An English-speaking Chinese.

2) A car with four wheels  a four-wheel car.

3) An animal with four legs  a four-legged animal.

4) A building with five stories  a five-story building.

FORMING OF COMPOUND ADJECTIVES
Form 1:

Number + Singular Noun

Ordinal Number + Noun

 A book that has fifty pages. = A fifty-page book


 A tower that is sixty feet high. = A sixty-foot tower.
 A seat that is first class. = A first-class seat

Form 2: Noun + verb + ING

 A machine that sustains life. = A life- sustaining machine.


 An activity that consumes time. = A time consuming activity
 News that break the heart. = Heart-breaking news

Form 3: Adjective + Noun + ED

 A baby that has blue eyes. = A blue-eyed baby.


 Clothes which are old fashion. = Old- fashioned clothes.

Form 4:

Adjective + Verb+ ING

Adverb + Verb+ ING

 I met a girl. She looked nice. = I met a nice-looking girl.


 A population that grows rapidly. = A rapidly-growing population.

Form 6: Adverb + Past Participle

 A room which is decorated nicely. = A nicely-decorated room.


 A trip which is planned well. = A well-planned trip

From 7: Noun + Past Participle

 A house which is surrounded by water. = A water-surrounded house.


 A mountain that is covered by a forest. = A forest-covered mountain.

Form 8: Noun + Adjective

 A chewing gum which is free from sugar. = A sugar-free chewing gum.


 A shirt that is Olive green. = A green-Olive shirt.

Form 9: Adjective + Noun

 A product with high quality. = A high-quality product


 Food with low calories. = Low-calories food.
