Introduction to Publisher 2007

The Objects Toolbar

 Every item on the page must be an object – including text


 The Objects toolbar is found on the left and includes:

Pointer to Select Objects


Text Box – all text must be typed into a text box
Insert a Table
Insert Word Art
Picture Frame – use to insert Clip Art and Pictures

Drawing Tools: line, arrow, oval, rectangle, autoshapes

Design Gallery Object – a collection of drawing objects and


text boxes grouped together to form a single object such as
a logo

Create a Text Box

1. Click on Text Box in the Objects toolbar


2. Click and drag on the publication to draw a text box. Or click once on the publication
and a text box appears. This box may be resized by dragging the sides or corners.
3. Type in text – use the Formatting Toolbar to change font, size, color, etc.
Tip: The text will not show if the box is too small – increase the size of the box if text
is missing

Delete a Text Box

1. Click on the border of the text box


2. Press the Delete key on the keyboard

Create a Border for the Text Box

1. Right click inside the text box and select Format Text Box (Or use the Format menu
and select Format Text Box)
2. Select the Colors and Lines tab

3. In the section labeled Line (see illustration below) select color, style and weight of
the border
4. Click OK

Note: For no borders select No Line from the Color dropdown menu

Put a Background Color Inside the Text Box

1. Right click inside the text box and select Format Text Box (Or use the Format menu
and select Format Text Box)
2. Select the Colors and Lines tab
3. In the section labeled Fill (see illustration below) select the color and transparency
4. Click OK

Note: For no background color select No Fill from the Color dropdown menu

Move Text Boxes

1. Move the mouse pointer over the object until the pointer becomes 4 arrows (you
may need to be on the border of an object in order for the 4 arrows to appear)
2. Drag and drop the object to a new location
Tip: Use the keyboard arrow keys to nudge a text box into location
Tip: Use the green circle to rotate a text box

Stack Text Boxes

 Text boxes can be stacked on top of each other


 To change the order, i.e. move a text box to the back or front of the stack, right click
on one of the text boxes and select Order (Or use the Arrange menu and select
Order)

Align Text Boxes to the Page Margins

1. Select two or more text boxes by holding the Ctrl key and clicking on each text box
2. From the Arrange menu select Align or Distribute
3. Select Relative to Margin Guides
4. Click the Arrange menu again and select Align or Distribute
5. Select the alignment you want – Left, Center, Right, etc.

Align Text Boxes to Each Other

1. Drag a guide onto the publication and use to line up one text box (optional)
2. Hold the Ctrl key select the other text boxes
3. From the Arrange menu select Align or Distribute
4. Be sure Relative to Margin Guides is not selected (click on it to deselect)
5. Click the Arrange menu again and select Align or Distribute
6. Select the alignment you want – Left, Center, Right, etc.

Group Text Boxes

1. With the Select Objects tool, draw a rectangle around the boxes you want to group
(Or hold the Ctrl key and click on each text box)
2. The text boxes will be grouped together – if this is not the case then click the Group

icon that appears


3. To ungroup – click on the group and click the Ungroup icon

Insert Clip Art

1. Click on Picture Frame from Objects toolbar


2. Select Clip art from the dropdown menu
3. The Clip art search pane opens, search for the clip art you want
4. Drag the clip art onto the publication or double click to have it appear on the
publication
5. Resize by dragging a corner in or out
6. Use the green handle to rotate the image
7. Use the Picture toolbar (which appears when you click on the clip art) to change
brightness, contrast, wrap-around text, etc.

Note: Clip Art objects can have borders, background colors, be moved, stacked and
grouped the same way as with text boxes.

Insert a Picture

1. Click on Picture Frame from Objects toolbar


2. Select Picture from File from the dropdown menu
3. Click once on the publication
4. The Insert Picture window opens
5. Browse for your picture  Insert
6. Resize by dragging a corner in or out
7. Use the green handle to rotate the picture
8. Use the Picture toolbar to change brightness, contrast, wrap-around text, etc.
Note: Picture Frames can have borders, background colors, be moved, stacked and
grouped the same way as with text boxes.

Place an Image Inside a Text Box

1. Create the text box and type in the text


2. Insert or drag an image into the text box where you want it
3. Right click on the image
4. Left click Format Picture
5. Click the Layout Tab
6. Select Square for the Wrapping Style
7. Select the alignment you want under Wrap Text
8. Click OK

Business Information

Many Publisher templates have a section for a business name and contact information.
You can add this information once with Edit  Business Information

Use a Predesigned Publication

1. In the Pane on the far left select Getting Started

2. Select a Publication Type

3. You will find templates listed in categories such as Newer Designs, Classic Designs,
Blank Sizes. Select the template you want and click Create
4. Use the Format Publication Pane (on the left) to change the color and font schemes
5. Type the text you want inside the text boxes
6. Move, delete, add text boxes and graphics as you want
7. Save the document

Add a Page Border

 Use Clip Art – search for Border


or
 Draw a rectangle on the publication for the border. Then right click inside the
rectangle and select Format AutoShape. Select the Colors and Lines tab and select a
color, style and weight in the Line section

Create Columns for a Tri-Fold Brochure

1. Start with a blank page size in landscape


2. Change the margin: Arrange  Layout Guides  select the Margin Guides tab  set
all margins to 0.2”
3. Create 3 columns: Arrange  Layout Guides  select the Grid Guides tab  select
3 columns and leave spacing between the columns at 0.2”
4. Create a second page: Insert  Duplicate Page
