How Does An Environmental Impact Assessment Manage A Mining Projects?

An environmental impact assessment (EIA) helps manage mining projects in several key ways: 1) The scoping stage identifies potential positive and negative impacts and determines if the project should proceed. It considers issues like protected land uses. 2) Stakeholder engagement allows concerns to be addressed, helping determine requirements and approaches to management. 3) Impact identification informs selection of alternative methods to reduce environmental effects and creation of reclamation plans. 4) Boundary and impact quantification in the EIA aid future planning of the mine regarding areas, influences, explosives use, and expected pollution levels. Periodic reviews further optimize environmental performance over the project lifetime.

HOW DOES AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT MANAGE A MINING PROJECTS?

An environmental impact assessment is a process or tool which is used to identify, predict and evaluate
the potential positive and negative environmental impacts of any proposed project, in this case a mining
project.

It has several stages which help in the management of a mining project. The scooping stage is one of those
stages which actively acts as a major hassle in the management duty of a mining project. In this stage the
initial critical decision whether or not to carry on with the mining project is made before the
commencement of the mining project. Questions like who has been using the land and what has it been
used for are answered. If for example the land is of national significance like a national heritage for
example, The Manor Pools or National Park, the mining project might have to be abandoned or if it’s in a
wetland which is protected by law.

Also an environmental impact assessment offers the opportunity for affected parties, interested parties
and the proponent a chance to address their grievances and concerns. This facilitates the finding of a
common ground and a decision is made on whether their requirements can be made or another approach
is needed which in turn helps in the management of the mining project. This by all means helps in the
management of a mining project as it gives a better understanding of where to start and gives the
proponent a chance to decide whether or not they can be able to meet the requirements of the affected
parties.

Also in the scooping stage the tonnage and expected production rates are estimated which help in the
mining project management by feeding directly into the future mine planning stage. The possible positive
and negative impacts of the mining project are identified and weighed out. If the negatives outweigh the
positives then a prescribed full Environmental Impact Assessment will be needed. Upon identification of
the negative impacts the Environmental Impact Assessment helps to manage w mining project by helping
to select alternative mining methods or processing methods which help to reduce the negative
environmental impacts of the mining project before it even starts.

An Environmental Impact Assessment helps to manage a mining project as the identification of impacts
helps to create a mine reclamation plan or rehabilitation approach which the mine can undertake during
or after the mine life. This can include the planting of trees or the filling of already mined out pits. Also
the laid out mitigation measures help in managing a mining project by giving room for costs estimation
which can go on to help in determining the amount of capital needed for the mining project to commence.

Moreover, an Environmental Impact Assessment helps to manage a mining project by helping in the
determination of boundaries in terms of space and time. This also helps to determine the specific
guidelines and terms of reference like how big of an area to be considered for the project and the
estimated area of influence of the project. This includes issues like looking at he surroundings and what
happens to it concerning issues not directly related to the mining project like for example the level of
development which comes with the project for example roads, Bridges and power lines.
An Environmental Impact Assessment has an allowance for impact assessment and quantification. This is
where the potential impacts identified in the scooping stage are evaluated in terms of likelihood, potential
severity and magnitude and possible duration is made. This helps in the future planning of a mining project
in deciding in the type and quantity of explosive and chemicals to use during the life of the mine so as to
try and reduce the quantified impacts.

Furthermore, an Environmental Impact Assessment helps to manage a mining project by helping in

deciding the amount of pollution to be expected helps in deciding whether or not to have workers living
on site or not. This helps in determining the level of operational costs to be expected throughout the life
of the mine.

An Environmental Impact Assessment helps to manage a mining project as it can be periodically reviewed
during the life of the mine to assess whether or not the mine is still operating within it’s stipulated
environmentally related goals which it had from its onset. This helps in making adjustments to the
currently operating sequence to find better ways which are environmentally friendly. It can also help in
the adjustment of the mine rehabilitation and reclamation approach to make it better.
