APPLIED KINESIOLOGY FUNDAMENTALS

HISTORY AND BENEFITS

OF MUSCLE TESTING
& APPLIED KINESIOLOGY
WITH JOHN MAGUIRE
WHAT WE WILL COVER IN TODAY’S CLASS

• The History of Muscle Testing and Kinesiology

• What muscle testing is and what we can use it for

• My background and how I use muscle testing personally and professionally

• Some simple ways to relieve pain and improve your health

• How you can benefit from using muscle testing and kinesiology

2
WHAT WE WILL COVER IN TODAY’S CLASS

• What the energy body is and the paradigm of energy medicine

• The lymphatic system and the neurolymphatic switches

• The Neurovascular holding points

• The acupuncture meridian system and simple ways to activate energy flow

• An easy to use, powerful emotional stress release technique

3
THE EAR UNROLLING TECHNIQUE

1. Turn your head to one side and then the other, noting where you feel tension.

2. Take hold of the top of each ear and gently unroll the curved parts at the outer edges. Pull firmly away
from the opening of the ear, massaging and stretching the ear with your fingers and thumbs. Work your
way down to the bottom continuing to unroll and stretch the ear. Repeat this 2 - 3 times.

3. Turn your head from left to right and notice any increase in neck flexibility and decrease in tension.

4. Other benefits of this technique: • Is a good energy booster increasing the flow of chi as the ears act as
antennae for the meridian system

• Helps relieve jet lag

• Improves your ability to listen and comprehend

4
MUSCLE TESTING
Muscle testing used in Kinesiology is a language to communicate with the body’s innate intelligence to get a
wide variety of information about the state of the body/mind and how things affect it

We can use muscle testing to: • Assess structural imbalances to locate areas of stress in the physical body that can
cause pain and dysfunction

• Uncover energy imbalance in the meridian systems and other systems, such as the
chakras and auric fields

• Find emotional stress and determine the best way to clear it with simple procedures

• Determine which foods and supplements enhance our health and which deplete it

• Determine priorities to work on

• Determine if our correction was effective

5
MUSCLE TESTING

• The person testing the muscle applies gentle, gradually increasing pressure to another person’s arm or leg.

• The person being tested attempts to hold the position without their body moving

• If they cannot hold the position, the muscle is considered weak or switched off

• If they can hold the position, the muscle is considered strong or switched on

• We use muscle testing to find out where energy is blocked in the body, what is causing the blockage and
what is the best way to remove the blockage

• We do not use muscle testing to diagnose or treat medical conditions

6
WHAT IS KINESIOLOGY?

There are basically two general types of kinesiology:

1. Academic Kinesiology

2. Applied Kinesiology and all of its branches

Academic Kinesiology is the study of bio mechanics and exercise physiology taught at universities

• It studies the function of muscles to assess their physical strength and neurological functioning, but
no connection is made to energy fields or any other holistic components

• This is what a physical fitness instructor, athletic trainer or sports conditioning coach might study to
become more adept in their field

7
WHAT IS KINESIOLOGY?

Applied Kinesiology uses muscle testing to access the innate intelligence in the body to find subconscious
information that the conscious mind is not aware of – a form of biofeedback

• It studies the health of the entire body considering neurological factors, along with energy fields and
any other holistic components

• It is used by chiropractors and other natural health professionals

8
ROBERT W. LOVETT, MD ORIGINATED MUSCLE TESTING

• The science of manual muscle testing was first developed in the early 1900’s by an orthopedic
surgeon, Robert W. Lovett, MD of Boston, Massachusetts.

• A muscle is tested by bringing the origin and insertion close together and then pushing the bone
that the insertion is attached to (leg, arm, head or torso) in the line of drive that will bring the
origin and insertion further apart.

• Lovett used muscle testing to analyze disabilities resulting from polio and nerve damage.

• He used muscle testing to trace spinal nerve damage because muscles that tested 'weak' often had a common spinal
nerve and published his findings in 1932.

9
FURTHER DEVELOPMENT BY KENDALL & KENDALL

• Physical Therapists, Henry & Florence Kendall of Baltimore, MD furthered Lovett’s

work releasing their ground breaking book, “Muscle Testing and Function” in 1949.

• They worked primarily with polio victims, particularly children.

• Their work tremendously forwarded the profession of physical therapy and

contributed to the understanding of bio-mechanics.

• Their work developed a new field of Academic Kinesiology, an in-depth analysis of

the exact way muscles moved joints.

10
APPLIED KINESIOLOGY

• Applied Kinesiology, developed by George Goodheart, DC, employs muscle testing to assess the
body’s structural balance and energy flow

• Goodheart discovered that there is connection between each of the acupuncture meridians and
specific muscles in the body, something not recognized in Academic Kinesiology

• He observed that muscle strength and function could be immediately improved when certain neurological reflexes
and other factors connected to the muscle were stimulated, including massage and acupressure, nutrition and
emotional stress release

• He also found that a previous strong muscle could become weak when a stressor is introduced, such as an upsetting
thought, unhealthy food, environmental stressor or touching an area of the body where there is stress or dysfunction

11
WHAT SYSTEMS OF ENERGY KINESIOLOGY HAVE IN COMMON

• Many systems grew out of AK including Touch for Health by John Thie, DC

• All these systems can be considered forms of Energy Kinesiology because they recognize everything is energy

• From a holistic perspective all parts of a person are interconnected

• All these systems use muscle testing as a way to listen to the innate intelligence that runs the body to determine:

• What’s at the source of a person’s health challenge

• Which holistic approach is the best way to bring the person back into balance and gain optimum health

12
“THE FIELD IS THE SOLE GOVERNING AGENT OF MATTER.”
ALBERT EINSTEIN

Everything is energy and we live in the center of a sea of energy

We have an energy body (a biofield) along with our physical body that is also energy in a denser form

Everything affects the energy body and thus our health and quality of life:

• Our lifestyle • Thinking and emotions

• Our environment • Relationships and communication

• Diet and supplements • Touch, which has a piezoelectric response creating energy that affects
the biofield

13
HOW YOU CAN BENEFIT FROM USING KINESIOLOGY

• Correct musculoskeletal issues, such as muscle aches and spasms, joint inflammation and
range of motion problems, headaches and back pain

• Improve digestion and elimination

• Discover an optimal diet and balancing body chemistry

• Improve sleep and creating greater calmness and peacefulness

• Boost energy levels and remove fatigue

14
HOW YOU CAN BENEFIT FROM USING KINESIOLOGY

• Enhance psychological balance and clear upsetting emotions and traumas

• Accelerate learning and educational development

• Optimize sports and dance performance

• Enhance job performance and productivity

• Promote spiritual development

15
AN INNATE INTELLIGENCE RUNS THE BODY

• We all possess an innate intelligence that knows how to keep us in peak health.

• This intelligence is connected to universal intelligence that pervades all things and sustains life and balance
in the universe.

• When you experience physical or emotional symptoms or disease, the way you are living, eating or thinking
is not allowing your innate wisdom to carry out its function to create and maintain maximum health.

• In this course you learn how to use muscle testing to tap into this innate wisdom and get direction as to what
changes you need to make to restore yourself and others to optimum health and balance.

16
ACUPUNCTURE MERIDIANS

• Meridians are invisible channels through which bioelectrical energy

known as chi circulates throughout the body. They run along the
surface of the body.

• Each meridian is related to and named after an organ or function.

These include: • Lung and Large Intestine

• Kidney and Bladder
• Liver and Gallbladder
• Spleen and Stomach
• Heart and Small Intestine
• Triple Warmer and Circulation-Sex

17
THE MUSCLE-ORGAN-MERIDIAN RELATIONSHIP

• Goodheart discovered that every muscle in the body is associated with an acupuncture meridian and an organ.

• When a acupressure meridian sedation point is stimulated, its associated muscles become weak when retested.

• When an organ is under stress, the muscle can become inhibited and will test weak upon manual muscle testing.

MUSCLE

• Your biochemistry affects your physical body and your mood. CHEMICAL MENTAL

• When your biochemistry is balanced, you feel great physically and emotionally.
MERIDIAN ORGAN
• If your hormones or neurotransmitters are imbalanced, your psychological state is affected. STRUCTURE

• The Mood Cure, written by psychologist Julie Ross, shows how to correct emotional challenges
through balancing body chemistry.

• Nutritional deficiencies and high levels of heavy metals can cause physical problems, such as
inflammation, muscle cramps, pain and dysfunction, along with psychological disorders.

19
THE TRIAD OF HEALTH
MUSCLE

• Your thoughts and emotions affect your biochemistry and your physical body. CHEMICAL MENTAL

• When you think a thought it stimulates the hypothalamus within the brain to trigger
the autonomic nervous system. MERIDIAN ORGAN
STRUCTURE
• Stressful thoughts trigger a “fight or flight” response, releasing stress hormones.

• Positive thoughts create a health response where “happy hormones” and a state of homeostasis, are created.

THE TRIAD OF HEALTH
MUSCLE

• Your structure and posture affects your emotional state and your moods. CHEMICAL MENTAL

• The state of your physical body affects your biochemistry.

MERIDIAN ORGAN
• When you are in physical pain you create stress hormones and have emotional upset. STRUCTURE

• When you are in postural balance you feel your best emotionally and your biochemistry is positively affected.
