Features of Pentium and Above Microprocessors

The document summarizes the features and specifications of various Intel microprocessors from Pentium through Core i7. It describes the clock speeds, cache sizes, number of transistors, and other specs of each model. The Pentium introduced 60-133 MHz clock speeds and 16KB cache. Later models like Pentium Pro, Pentium 2, Pentium 3, and Pentium 4 increased clock speeds up to 3.2 GHz and cache sizes up to 2MB. More recent Core i3, i5, and i7 models operate at 1.06-3.46 GHz with varying cache configurations and bus speeds, with Core i7 being the most advanced.

Features of Pentium and Above

Microprocessors

The Pentium Microprocessor:-

• The two introductory version of of the Pentium are

operated with a clocking frequency of 60 MHz and
66MHz.
• Speed is 110 MIPS.
• The double –clocked Pentium are operated at 120MHz
and 133 MHz.They were high speed versions.
• Cache size was 16K bytes.
• The memory system contained up to 4G bytes.
• The data bus width was 64 bits.
• The data bus transfer speed was either 60 MHz or 66
MHz, depending upon the version of Pentium.

Pentium Pro Processor:-

• The clock frequency was 150 MHz and 166 MHz.
• In addition to the internal 16K level-one (L1) cache, the
Pentium Pro processor also contains a 256K level-two
(L2) cache.
• Pentium Pro Processor uses three execution engines, so it
can execute up to three instructions at a time, which can
conflict and still execute in parallel.
• It can address either 4G –byte memory system or a 64G-
byte memory system.
• It has a 36-bit address bus if configured for a 64G-byte
memory system.
• It contains 21 million transistors.integer unit,as well as a
floating-point to increase the performance of most
software.

Pentium 2 and Pentium Xeon

Microprocessor:-

• Intel has placed the Pentium 2 on a small circuit board.

• The L2 cache and microprocessor are on a circuit
board called the Pentium 2 module.
• This onboard L2 cache operates at a speed of 133 MHz
and stores 512K bytes of information.
• The microprocessor on the Pentium 2 module is
actually Pentium Pro with MMX extensions.
• In 1998, the Intel changed the bus speed of Pentium
2.the newer Pentium 2 microprocessor use a 100 MHz
bus speed.
• The Pentium 2 microprocessors rated at 350 MHz, 400
MHz, and 450 MHz all use this higher 100 MHz
memory bus speed.
• The higher speed memory bus requires the use of 8 ns
SDRAM in place of 10 ns SDRAM found in use with
the 66 MHz bus speed.
• Pentium Xeon was the new version of Pentium 2
microprocessor.
• It was designed for high-end workstation and server
applications.
• Xeon is available with a L1 cache size of 32K bytes
and L2 cache size of either 512K, 1M, or 2M bytes.

Pentium 3 Microprocessor:-
• The Pentium 3 microprocessor uses a faster core than
the Pentium 2.
• It is also available in the slot 1 version and the Flip-
Chip version that costs less.
• It has a clock frequency up to 1 GHz.
• The slot 1 version contains 512K cache and the Flip-
Chip version contains a 256K cache.
• Both version use a memory bus speed of 100 MHz.

Pentium 4 and Core2

Microprocessors:
• The Pentium 4 is available in speeds to 3.2 GHz.
• The chip sets that support the Pentium 4 use the
RAMBUS or DDR memory technologies in place of
once standard SDRAM technology.
• The core2 is available at speeds of up to 3 GHz.
• The Pentium 4 Extreme Edition contains 2M L2 cache.
• Core2 contains a 2M or 4M L2 cache.
• Core 2 can contain single, dual or Quad cores.
• New modifications to the Pentium and core2 include a
64-bit core and multiple cores.
• The 64-bit modification allows the microprocessor to
address more than 4G bytes of memory through a
wider 64-bit address.

Core i3, i5, i7

In January 2010, Intel released the newest generation of

Core processors as a transition away from the Core 2
family. The Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 each have a range
of capabilities that are tailored to specific computing needs
and are available with two, four or six cores. For example,
users can choose a dual core or quad core processor when
buying a computer with a Core i5 processor.

The Core i3 processor is considered entry-level, and the

Core i7 is available for more advanced users. The Core i3
processors include Hyper-Threading technology that allow
the processor to work on two tasks simultaneously. As a
result, users can run multiple applications efficiently. The
Core i5 and Core i7 processors incorporate Turbo Boost
Technology, which enables the processor to continuously
adapt to a user's specific computing needs.
• Intel core i3 has clock frequency of 2.4 GHz - 3.06
GHz.
• It has a bus speed of 1066 MHz, 1600 MHz, or 2.5
GT/s.
• It has 256KB L2 cache size and 3 MB - 4MB L3 cache
size.
• Intel core i5 has clock frequency of 1.06 GHz - 3.46
GHz.
• It has a bus speed of 2.5 GT/s.
• It has 256KB L2 cache size and 4MB - 8MB L3 cache
size.
• Intel core i7 has clock frequency of 1.6 GHz -
3.33 GHz.
• It has a bus speed of 4.8 GT/s or 6.4 GT/s.
• It has 4×256 KB L2 cache size and 6MB - 8MB
L3 cache size.
