Operating System Introduction


A. Definition of Operating System
The operating system (OS) is a software that works on a computer or phone, it is used to manage
computer hardware and software resources.

B. Functions of Operating System


 Creating a link between users and the system makes it more convenient to use.
 Management of computer system resources.
 Provide resources for programs.
 Help users easily use resources.
 Providing system utility services.

II. Development stages of the Windows operating


system (1985-2015)
A. Windows 1.0 (1985)
This version was released in November 1985. This is the first version of Windows so it only has a
few basic utilities and has less than 1Mb capacity. This is also the first version to use the mouse to
access instead of using code

B. Windows 2.0 (1987)


This version was improved based on Windows 1.0 and achieved more success than Windows 1.0.
It was also the first version to run Microsoft Word and Excel.

C. Windows 3.0 (1990)


Was born on May 22, 1990. This is the first successful and popular commercial version with a
nicer interface than previous versions. It was also the first true multitasking operating system.

D. Windows 95 (1995)
Released in August 1995. this is the first version with the appearance of Internet Explorer,
Recycle Bin and Start button. It also allows conversion between 32-bit and 16-bit formats.

E. Windows 98 (1998)
This is an upgraded version of Windows 95. Add some useful features such as: support for USB,
network connection sharing, FAT32 file system and more stable operation.

F. Windows ME (2000)
Windows ME (Millennium Edition) is a version to celebrate 2000. Windows ME upgraded some
features of Windows 98 but the sales are not good.

G. Windows 2000 (2000)
Windows 2000 comes in 5 different versions: Professional, Server, Advanced Server, Datacenter
Server and Small Business Server. Windows 2000 Professional operating system is an enterprise
version replacing Windows 95, 98 with stability and beautiful interface.

H. Windows XP (2001)
This is the first major update of Windows from Windows 95 with a completely new design.

I. Windows Vista (2007)


A significant step forward in the design and takes 5 years to complete. Windows Vista requires
highly configurable computers with an Aero interface that displays 3D components, but there are a
lot of development mistakes.

J. Windows 7 (2009)
Windows 7 is actually an upgraded version of Vista but is more stable and has a few interface
changes. Windows 7 is still in common use so far.

K. Windows 8 (2012)
Windows 8 was released in October 2012 with the aim of creating an operating system that can
support both touchscreen computers and desktops. The main interface has no Start button and it
makes users difficult to use. Windows 8 has failed because of its interface.

L. Windows 10 (2015)
This is the last version so far and the Start menu has reappeared. Windows 10 is greatly
appreciated compared to previous versions. The interface, features are practical and better serve
the user, whether working or entertaining.

III. Comparison
A. Process vs Program
1. Definition of Program
The Program is a “Passive Entity”, it does not perform any operations without it being specified.
In other words, it is a group of instructions for performing the specified task.

2. Definition of Process
The Process is an “Active Entity”, it appears when the program is being executed or is easier to
understand than when a program is executed, that is the Process. In a program, there is usually one
or more processes, so a process is usually has a shorter lifespan than a program because it will end
after the task is completed.

B. The difference between a process and a program


Program Process
 Passive Entity.  Active Entity.
 A group of instructions for performing  When a program is executed, that is the
the specified task. Process.
 Longer lifespan.  Limited lifespan.
 A program that only needs memory to  Higher resource requirements, such as
store. CPU, memory address, disk, I/O etc.
