CLASS NOTES

E. Short answer questions.

1. What is bit?
Ans. The bit is the smallest amount of data or in other words a single binary digit is called
as a bit.

2. What is machine language?

Ans. A computer understands and stores data and information in form of machine
language. A machine language consists of binary digits, i.e. 0 (False/ OFF) and 1 (True/ ON).

3. Write types of RAM.

Ans. The types of RAM are Dynamic RAM (DRAM) and Static RAM (SRAM).
4. What is computer memory?
Ans. A physical storage space such as chips or a device which can store information
temporarily or permanently is called a computer memory. It is a storage space where data
and instructions are stored either for processing of for further uses. A computer consists of
two types of memory, which are primary and secondary.

5. What is storage capacity?

Ans. The maximum amount of data that can be stored in a computer is called its storage
capacity.

6. Describe cache memory.

Ans. Cache memory is a special very high-speed memory that acts as a buffer between
RAM and the CPU. It is used to reduce the average time to access data from the main
memory.

F. Long answer questions.

1. What is primary memory? Describe RAM and ROM.

Ans. The primary memory is also known as the main memory of a computer. It is in-built
memory of a computer in which data and instructions are stored for processing. It is
essential for the working of a computer. There are two types of primary memory- RAM
and ROM.
RAM- The term RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It is often called the main
memory of the computer. It holds the data and instructions on which computer is
currently working.
ROM- The term ROM stands for Read Only Memory. As the name indicated, information
can only be read from this type of memory.
2. Describe secondary memory.
Ans. A secondary memory is also called the external memory or auxiliary storage. It stores
a large amount of data permanently until someone deletes it purposely. A secondary
memory is important for a computer because the internal memory has less capacity to
store the data. A computer uses different secondary storage devices, to store data and
information such as hard disk, CD, DVD, pen drive and memory card.

3. Define the following:

a. Hard disk
b. Pen drive
c. CD
Ans. HARD DISK- A hard disk is a type of magnetic secondary storage media. It is the main
secondary storage for the computers. A hard disk can store up to 2 TB to 5 TB data. There
are two types of hard disk- fixed and portable.
PEN DRIVE- A Pen drive is also known as a flash drive. It is commonly used to store a large
amount of information. It is very easy to copy and move data from one computer to
another using a pen drive. It is a small, lightweight and portable device.
CD- A compact disc (CD) is a type of optical secondary storage media. It is circular in shape
and small in size. A CD is a portable device that we use for storing text, video, audio,
graphics, images, or taking backup of data, programs and software. A CD can store around
700 MB data.
