CEB 811 - Test 2

This document contains a 6 question test on coastal engineering. Question 1 asks students to draw a cross section of a rubble mound breakwater and label its components, list two types of breakwaters and provide examples, and draw and label a beach profile. Question 2 involves analyzing a grain size distribution graph. Question 3 involves calculating longshore current velocity and sand transport given wave conditions. Question 4 involves calculating bed load due to waves and currents given physical parameters. Question 5 involves calculating forces and moments on a vertical seawall. Question 6 asks students to calculate drag, inertia, and total forces and moments on a cylindrical pile in the nearshore given physical conditions. The test covers a range of topics in coastal engineering

Question 3 5 marks
A wave train with an average period of 8.5 s and breaker height of 3.5m is approaching the shore and
breaking at an angle of 17.5o with the shoreline. What average longshore current velocity is generated? If
this wave train represents the average conditions for the day, what volume of longshore sand transport is
produced in 24hr?

Question 4 10 marks
Determine the bed load due to waves and current for the following data. Consider a deep-water wave of
height (Ho) 2.7m with wave period (T) of 12s, wavelength of 42.59m and wave angle (o) of 65o.
Other data are given below:
ρw= 1025kg/m3; kinematic viscosity, ν=10-6m2/s;
Current velocity, U=0.7m/s; ρs= 2650kg/m3; s=2.59
Still water depth, h (or d)=3.5m; d50=0.3mm;
Ripple height, Hr = bed roughness, Ks=100d50=0.03m;
Fall velocity, ws=0.027m/s,
Von-karman constant, k=0.4

Question 5 7 marks
