Statement of the Problem

Generally, the purpose of this study is to describe and analyze fraternity members lived

experiences on their quality of life. The research question that guided this research study is:

1. What are the lived experiences among fraternity members on their quality of life today in

terms of:

1.1 Physical Being;

1.2 Psychological Being;

1.3 Spiritual Being;

1.4 Social Belonging;

1.5 Practical Belonging, and

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework

DAGDAG PA AT LEAST 1 THEORY RELATABLE TO THE TITLE!!!!

This study is anchored on the theory of Influential Peer Theory and the Theory of

Belongingness by Baumeister and Leary (1995). Based on the study conducted by Molloy, L.,

Gest, S.D., & Rulison, K. L. (2015) which suggests that group affiliation and peer relationship

differentially influencing changes in youths’ academic adjustment as well as stronger influence

for academic performances. Furthermore, implications are discussed in terms of distinct

influence processes associated with each peer relationship type as well as potential

developmental differences in the role that certain peer relationships play.

The study implies that group affiliations or peers can do affect individual’s motivation in

life in a positive or negative reinforcement. Peers influence youth in a variety of domains,

including academic adjustment (e.g., Altermatt & Pomerantz, 2005; Berndt & Keefe, 1995;

Guay, Boivin, & Hodges, 1999; Kindermann, 2007; Ryan, 2001), but the magnitude of peer

influence effects is typically small and evidence regarding age-related differences in influence is

mixed (e.g., Berndt & Murphy, 2002)..

On the other hand, the theory of Belongingness suggests that natural selection favored

individuals who maintained close bonds with groups because this attachment provides security

and facilitates reproduction. As stated by Baumeister and Leary on their theory, man is a social

being in which he has to be with other to cope with this fast paced world.

Lived Experiences on Quality of Life

Figure 1. Schematic Diagram of the Conceptual Framework the Study
The bigger circle represents the whole person and his lived experiences on quality of life
in Fraternity. It shows the interconnection of the following indicators.

Physical Being includes the aspect of physical health, personal hygiene, nutrition, exercise,
grooming, clothing and physical appearance, such as if the participant is being physically able to
get around.

Psychological Being includes the person’s psychological health and adjustments, cognitions,
feelings, and evaluations concerning the self, and self-control, in short, the state of being free of
worry and stress.

Spiritual Being reflects on personal values, personal standards of conduct and spiritual beliefs
which may not be associated with organized religions, showing the state of mind of the
participants of having hope for the future.

Social Belonging includes the person’s fit with his/her environments. This includes links with
social environment and includes the sense of acceptance by intimate others, family, friends, co-
workers, and neighborhood and community.

Practical Becoming describes day-to-day actions such as domestic activities, paid works, school
or volunteer activities, and seeing to health or social needs. This includes the idea on the quality
of life of the participants if they are doing things around such as working at a job or going on
volunteer works.

These indicators were identified as the part of the Three Life Domains: Being, Belonging
and Becoming as the domains of quality of life as stated on the Quality of L ife Research
Unit, University of Toronto, 1994.
Scope and Delimitation

The study is concerned with exploring and examining the lived experiences of four (4)

fraternity members in Trece Martires City. The participants should be a member for at least one

(1) year up to present and ages from 18- 35 at the time of the study.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the research design, the participants of the study, the sampling

procedure, the data gathering procedure and the analysis and interpretation of the data.

The Research Design

The study used the Qualitative-Phenomenological type of research. According to Dr.

Janet Waters (2016) the goal of qualitative phenomenological research is to describe a lived

experience of a phenomenon. As this is a qualitative analysis of narrative data, methods of

research. This approach will be using a semi- structured in depth interview with the participants

to determine their experiences on quality of life being a member of fraternity.

The Participants of the Study

The participants in the study were four (4), who are active members of fraternity of not

less than one year up to present in Trece Martires City. Their age range is from 18 and above and

in order to protect the identity of the participants and to ensure confidentiality, they will be

assigning each pseudonym. These names will be consistently used all throughout the study

whenever there is a need for the researcher to refer to the participants.

The Research Locale

The study will be conducted at Trece Martires City, Cavite.

The Population and Sampling

For Phenomenological studies, the use of smaller number of participants is justifiable due

to nature of engaging them into in-depth personal interview in the data- gathering Dukes

(1984 cited in Creswell, 2007) .Four 4 participants were considerable in a qualitative study as it

provides enough quality time to engage them into in-depth personal interview.

Owing to the sensitivity if the study, the researcher will employ purposive sampling in

identifying the participants as they will purposely inform an understanding of the research

problem to the target participants. The researcher will be using snowball or chain sampling in

particular by which target research participants recruits other participants for the study. It is

being used where potential participants are hard to find (Stephanie, 2014).

The Research Instrument

To assess the lived experience on quality of Life of the fraternity members, an interview

and observation will be used by the researcher to gather data. The researcher formulated a self-

made interview questions subjected to validation. The flow of interview will largely depends on

the researcher’s skill in asking questions, probing depth and eliciting the necessary responses and

data from the participants.

The Data Gathering procedure

The following procedures were observed during date gathering.

1. The study will be conducted in the participant’s natural setting where they will be

interviewed in- depth so as to achieve pertinent data about the existence under study.

2. The researcher will be the one to ask the participants guided by the prepared set of

interview questions and will largely depends on his skill in asking the right question

and eliciting more.

3. Upon the consent of the participants, the interview proper will be recorded using

cellphone recorder to record all their responses and answers and to make sure that all

of his statements will be documented while taking down notes of the participants

subtle nuances when the interview was on going.

4. In order to ensure that the participants agreed to the voluntariness of the interview, a

consent waiver is provided that any information they shared will be dealt with utmost

confidentiality and be used for research purposes only.

5. Lastly, gathered responses from each participants will be subjected to analysis and

interpretation.
