The Rizal Law and The Philippines in the
Advent of Rizal
Rizal Law or the Republic Act No. 1425 was implemented to all public and
private universities and colleges in order for the students to be enlightened of the life
and works of our hero Jose Rizal who was the man, a first Filipino, which wakes the
Filipinos to the cruelty and injustice governance by the Spaniards at that era in order
to reclaim the independence which has been withheld from us with his literary works.
With the help of some government officials throughout the process of enactment of
this law, the bill was successfully enacted into law on June 1956. But there were still
some of this officials who are dignified to object of this bill when in fact there should
be no one to contradict. The heroic deed of our ancestors must be known among us
Filipinos.
As we all known in the process of the enactment of a bill there are only two
people who acts a role, first are the one who approves and the second are the one
who disapproves. The Senates namely Jose P. Laurel and Claro M. Recto are
mainly the one who defended the bill against Mariano J. Cuenco, Francisco Rodrigo
and Decoroso Rosales who are against them and to the bill. Both side have their
own justification of what they felt is right and why must it rise and fall. The contrary
side concerns more about the Catholic Church and it was stand against with Recto.
The opposed even tell that the novels are inimical to the Catholic faith.
Religion is in fact one of the reason why does the Rizal Law have gone far
from some trials. In the literary works of Jose Rizal, the past image of the church is
portrayed. It is believe by Catholic Church leaders that it may affect the integrity of
the church. That is why the opposed group and the leaders of Catholic Church
agreed with each other.
It is to be noted that the law purpose was to inspire the Filipino youth the
character of nationalism. If the youth lacks the knowledge of the past how can a
person still stand to his freedom when he doesn’t know the root of what he enjoyed
as of today? Saying you are proud that you are a Filipino is just easy to say but
being truthful and loyal to the country is just hard to do. In these modern era where
there are some colonialism present but there is no war or bloodshed who pursuit the
minds of the people to turn away from its own culture and identity of being a Filipino
is something must keep an eye on especially when one is easily persuaded by other
culture around the world. In the matter of the opposing side in my opinion the two
works of Jose Rizal probably does not had a good portrayal of the church but it is still
a concern that must be upheld among those people who believe. Truth must be told
that there are some imperfections in everything. A past image will not ruin an image
of what’s in the present because people have the faith and a good outlook in life. The
church is the house of God but God is the reason why people connect and why do
they have faith. The past may affect the present but the present still on charge on the
way. And as to what Recto said about the matter, “Rizal did not pretend to teach
religion or theology when he wrote those books. He aimed at inculcating civic
consciousness in the Filipinos, national dignity, personal pride, and patriotism, and if
references were made by him in the course of his narration to certain religious
practices in the Philippines in those days and to conduct and behavior of erring
ministers of the church, it was because he portrayed faithfully the general situation in
the Philippines as it then existed. Nobody can dispute that the situation described by
Rizal in those days, political, social and religious, was the one actually obtaining in
the Philippines; but while he criticized and ridiculed the unworthy behavior of certain
ministers of the church, he made exceptions in favor of the worthy ones, like the
Dominican friar, Padre Fernandez, and the virtuous native priest, Padre Florentino
and the Jesuits in general (Laurel, 1960).” I agree to his statement, even if the novels
specifically Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo has involved the church among
these works but Jose Rizal is not being biased on what’s happening during his time.
The works are his portrayal on what really happened and who are the one involve
from this cause. Even if he included some one or two priests but he did not portrayed
it holistically. The Filipino in this modern era must be aware of the past not be
deprived.
