Founded in 1984, VIT has a made a mark in the field of higher education
in India imparting quality education in a cross-cultural ambience,
intertwined with extensive application oriented research. Established by
the well-known educationist and former Parliamentarian Dr. G.
Viswanathan (Founder-Chancellor), VIT has transformed into a centre of
excellence in higher technical education and now has been recognized as
an Institution of Eminence (IOE) by Govt. of India. His dream has taken
the shape of VIT Chennai. Spearheaded by Dr. Sankar Viswanathan, Vice

The School of Mechanical Engineering (SMEC) at VIT Chennai was
established to impart state-of-the art education, training and research in VIT Vellore – 632 014.
