Chap1
1.What does management mean to you?
Management includes the activities of setting the strategy of an organization and coordinating
the efforts of its employees to accomplish its objectives
2.Explain the areas of management, with example.
There are 2 areas of managements: general and functional management.
General management is the activity of managing everything that happens in the business,
helping the departments to have a close relationship with each other.
#For example, in a restaurant, Thanh is the overall manager, Thanh is responsible for monitoring
the integration of departments such as the kitchen, bar, parking ... to help the business run
smoothly.
Functional management is the management of certain areas of the organization or its links.
#For example production, personnel, marketing, finance. In any organization, general and
functional management exists in unity, forming an integrated management system.
3. What are the level of managers in an organization? How do managers at each level
perform management function?
Top management: are responsible for planning, decision making, strategizing
Middle management: are responsible for communicating, implementing, connecting
Lower management: are responsible for correcting, reporting, supervising
Chap2
1. Discuss Fayol’s 14 principles of management. Are these principles applicable for
managers today?
Fayol's principles are listed below:
1. Division of Work – When employees are specialized, the output can increase because they
become increasingly skilled and efficient.
2. Authority – Managers must have the authority to give orders, but they must also keep in mind
that with authority comes responsibility.
3. Discipline – Discipline must be upheld in organizations, but methods for doing so can vary.
4. Unity of Command – Employees should have only one direct supervisor.
5. Unity of Direction – Teams with the same objective should be working under the direction of
one manager, using one plan. This will ensure that action is properly coordinated.
6. Subordination of Individual Interests to the General Interest – The interests of one employee
should not be allowed to become more important than those of the group. This includes
managers.
7. Remuneration – Employee satisfaction depends on fair remuneration for everyone. This includes
financial and non-financial compensation.
8. Centralization – This principle refers to how close employees are to the decision-making
process. It is important to aim for an appropriate balance.
9. Scalar Chain – Employees should be aware of where they stand in the organization's hierarchy or
chain of command.
10. Order – The workplace facilities must be clean, tidy, and safe for employees. Everything should
have its place.
11. Equity – Managers should be fair to staff at all times, both maintaining discipline as necessary
and acting with kindness where appropriate.
12. Stability of Tenure of Personnel – Managers should strive to minimize employee turnover.
Personnel planning should be a priority.
13. Initiative – Employees should be given the necessary level of freedom to create and carry out
plans.
14. Esprit de Corps – Organizations should strive to promote team spirit and unity.
Today, various management principles are still being followed, mainly based on the management
concepts enunciated by Henri Fayol. These principles are flexible and are capable of adaptation
depending on the specific need of the organization.
2. Explain the contingencies view of management with relevant example
A contingency approach to management is based on the theory that management effectiveness is
contingent, or dependent, upon the interplay between the application of management behaviors and
specific situations. In other words, the way you manage should change depending on the circumstances.
One size does not fit all.
#For example, Ngoc was not working and without notice yesterday. In order to better understand the
reasons for not working, the manager asked Ngoc to determine the specific reason
3. Based on the management perspectives you learned in this chapter, what are the
challenges faces by managers today?
Challenges of Globalization: This is a significant challenge, necessitating consideration for different
tastes and branding strategies during the implementation process.
The Challenge of Diversity: Globalization demands a diverse workforce, and assimilating varying cultures,
genders, ages, and dispositions is of high value.
The Challenge of Technology: Technology management is crucial in offsetting the risks of new
technology while acquiring the operational benefits it provides.
The Challenge of Competition: Managers must understand a company’s competitive advantage and
build a strategy that takes into account the competitive landscape.
The Challenge of Ethics and Governance: Ethics is at the core of corporate governance, and
management must reflect accountability for their actions on a global community scale.
Managers must be not only aware of diversity in the workplace but also open-minded and empathetic to
perspectives other than their own. The goal for management is to ensure everyone is working to
assimilate to everyone else in a balanced and effective manner that
harvests differences rather than smoothing them over.
Chap3
1. Is there any ethical impact associated with the “change”?
Although businesses want to develop, they need to have strong human resources in terms of
professional knowledge and skills in the field. However, ethical factors such as honesty, integrity derived
from individual employees, managers and at all levels contribute significantly to the strength in the
formation and development of the organization.
2. Imagine that you are the CEO in the company and empowered to make
certain change on the company culture. How would you do it?
If I'm the CEO in the company and empowered to make certain changes in the company culture.
gives employees the freedom to express their opinions or even the strategies that are intended to be
feasible to promote business growth and in addition to facilitate the professional development of each
employee.
Worthy mode, in which employees are promoted and rewarded based on their achievements and
talents so that they know that success at the company is based solely on their abilities.
Chap4
1.Explain verbally to a friend how the reduction of trade barriers around the world has speed up
the process of globalization
Is simply to make the trade from one country to another country easier
The elimination of tax barriers is the reduction of tax costs among member countries in order to
promote trade activities and market expansion cooperation.
2. If you were offered a foreign assignment for two years in Malaysia, discuss on the possible
challenges that you should expect to face as a manager in that country.
And if I have the chance to work in Malaysia tomorrow, the challenges I will face are many from law,
economy, society ... and cultural difference is the first thing I think of.
Each country, each territory in the world has different cultures and customs, so besides the opportunity
to exchange and learn about culture, this difference also creates obstacles in adaptation, harmony with
life
I need to be sensitive to be able to adapt to all the factors happening around my life: new languages,
new culture, new climate and weather.
Chap 5
1. Discuss how and why corporations need to create an ethical culture.
How corporations need to create an ethical culture
2. Discuss factors that lead to ethical and unethical behavior.
Factors that lead to ethical behavior: business ethics is shaped by several factors:
- By individuals weighing what is right and wrong before deciding or taking action.
- By the ethical climate, the prevailing combination of a company’s stated beliefs and its real
actions, for example, leadership by example.
- By a firm’s code of conduct, usually made of statements in which “the right to do” is
encouraged and applauded.
- By a firm’s framework designed to encourage, or demand, high ethical standards from its
workers, for example. Recruitment, training, discipline and rewards systems, and whistle blowing
policy.
Factors that lead to ethical behavior.
In organizations, factors which could cause employees to act unethically include pressure to
meet sales or profit targets, and lack of recognition and poor communication.
3. Explain “sustainability” and why organizations are embracing it
Sustainability is an enterprise approach and maintained in the long term, it balances the interests of the
business less and the common interests of society such as environment, economy, and resources.

a plan.

Step 7: Make a list of all the things you need to do to achieve your goal.
Step 8: let's do it
3. Describe management by objective (MBO)
MBO is Management by Objectives - a governance model by goals: Start by defining the goals of the
top level, then define the goals and targets of lower levels or in a shorter term. MOB Manage all work
based on goal measurement and on goal execution plan.
