WEEK 1: TOPIC PROPOSAL AND PROBLEM STATEMENT PAPER

Topic Proposal and Problem Statement Paper 2

Topic Statement

The topic I chose is Schizophrenia. It is a mental illness that emerges in adolescence or

young adulthood and causes difficulties in thinking and unusual experiences such as hearing

unpleasant voices or having false and sometimes bizarre beliefs. People with Schizophrenia often

avoid family and friends, lack motivation and are often unable to work. As we know that mental

health includes our emotional and social well-being along with psychological health. It affects

every aspect of our life. Mental health was a dark area in the medical field, but recent decades

have seen growing emphasis on the mental aspect of health. Being mentally fit is the bottom line

of a physically fit body. As the research is growing in the field of mental health, many diseases

were earlier encapsulated under the word "mentally ill." These are now studied in detail, and

their treatment is being developed. One such mental condition is "Schizophrenia. Proper research

in this field will reveal many more aspects of Schizophrenia. The intended goal is to study

various investigations related to this issue and develop an understanding of its different causes

and effects. This goal is realistic and practical as it directly helps me to connect to the issue of

mental health and will open new dimensions of mental health while doing study related to this.

Its early detection can reduce its severity at the initial stage itself.

Problem Statement

Schizophrenia is a mental illness that affects a person's ability to think, analyze, express,

feel, and behave. It leads to a gradual change in moods, social habits, and hampered thinking. As

per WHO, more than 69% of people with Schizophrenia are not receiving appropriate care. Lack

of access to mental health services is an important issue. As a fact, all the mental conditions,

including depression, have one or more similar traits; thus, it is tough to identify the exact

condition from the overlapping symptoms. The medications prescribed are nearly identical to

those for other mental conditions such as depressions. Misdiagnosis, along with improper

medications, increases the severity of the disease and worsen the life of the patient. A well-

balanced study including probable reasons, causes, various stages, analysis, therapies, and

inclusion of yoga science can provide great assistance to someone who is suffering from this

disease. The ignorant attitude towards mental health needs to be changed, and it should be

treated as equivalent to physical well-being.

Men tend to get develop Schizophrenia slightly earlier than women; whereas most males

become ill between 16 and 25 years old, most females develop symptoms several years later, and

the incidence in women is noticeably higher in women after age 30. The average age of onset is

18 in men and 25 in women.
