Activity Sheet In: General Mathemati

The document is a lesson plan from the Department of Education for Senior High School students on representing logarithmic functions through tables of values, graphs, and equations. It provides examples of constructing tables of values for logarithmic functions and using the tables to sketch the graphs. It discusses properties of logarithmic graphs, including that they are only defined for positive x values and their shapes depend on whether the base is greater than or less than one. Students are provided practice problems constructing tables and sketching graphs, and an evaluation with more practice.

(M11GM-Ii-2)
Represents a logarithmic function through its a. Table of
values, b. Graph and c. Equation.

LET US KNOW
This learner activity sheet was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you master how to Represents a logarithmic function through its a. Table of values, b.
Graph and c. Equation.The scope of this learner activity sheet permits it to be used in many
different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of
students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the
order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now
using.

The learner activity sheet will focus on the topic on:

Represents a logarithmic function through its a. Table of values, b. Graph and c.
Equation.

After going through this learner activity sheet, you are expected to Represents a
logarithmic function through its a. Table of values, b. Graph and c. Equation.

LET US REVIEW
Solve the following, use another sheet of paper.

1. log x 125=3
2. log 6 ( 4 x +8)=2
3. log 3 ( x 2−8 x )=2
2 x−6
4. log 7 >0
2 x −1

5. log 1 x> log x 3−

LET US STUDY
In graphing logarithmic function there are several steps we need to
follow.

Example: Sketch the graph of g ( x )=log 2 x

Solution:
Step 1. Construct table of values

x
g( x ) -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

3
If g(x) = -3 If g(x) = 1
−3=log 2 x 1=log 2 x
x=2−3 x=21
1 x=2
x=

If g(x) = 2
If g(x) = -2 2=log 2 x
−2=log 2 x

3=log 2 x
If g(x) = -1 x=23
−1=log 2 x x=8
x=2−1

2

If g(x) = 0
0=log 2 x
x=20
x=1

1 1 1
x 1 2 4 8
8 4 2
g( x ) -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

Step 2. Plot the points and connect them with smooth curve.
The function is defined only for x > 0. The function is strictly increasing and
attains all real values. As x approaches 0 from the right, the function decreases without
bound, i.e., the line x = 0 is a vertical asymptote.

Example 2. Sketch the graph of y=log 1 x

Solution
Step 1. Construct a table of values of ordered pairs for the given
function.

1 1 1 1 4
x 1 2 3
16 8 4 2
y 4 3 2 1 0 -1 -2 -3

Step 2. Plot the points found in the table and connect them using smooth
curve.

It can be observed that the function is defined only for x > 0. The function is
strictly decreasing and attains all real values. As x approaches 0 from the right, the
function increases without bound, i.e., the line x = 0 is a vertical asymptote.

LET US PRACTICE
Make a table of values and sketch the graph. Use another sheet of
paper.

1. y=log 4 x 2. y=log 6 ( x−1)

x x

y -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 y -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

LET US REMEMBER

7
Analyzing the logarithmic function The graphs of y=log 1 x and y=log x indicate that the
2
2
graphs of the logarithmic function y = logb x depends on the value of b. We generalize the
results as follows.

y=log b x (b>1) y=log b x ( 0<b<1)

LET US APPRECIATE
Which of the following is the graph of y=log ( 2 x+ 2 )+ 5? Encircle the

graph of your answer.

LET US PRACTICE
