Assignment 1 & 2

The document provides an overview and instructions for two assignments related to geotechnical engineering. It discusses defining soils and their formation, different types of soils, the importance of soils in civil engineering, and field applications of geotechnical engineering. It also covers physical properties of soils like density, void ratio, porosity, water content and specific gravity. Methods for determining these properties from soil samples are described along with relationships between the different properties. Classification of soils by particle size, texture, unified system and Indian standard system is also outlined.
