5.1 ANDT Services:

Tube Inspection – ECT, RFT, MFL & IRIS

Tube Inspection with Eddy Current Testing (ECT)

 Condensers
 Feed water heaters
 Heat exchangers
 Air conditioners

Eddy current testing is a noncontact method used to inspect

non ferromagnetic tubing. This technique is suitable for
detecting and sizing metal discontinuities such as corrosion,
erosion, wear, pitting, baffle cuts, wall loss, and cracks in
nonferrous materials.

Tube Inspection with an Internal Rotating Inspection System (IRIS) for Ferrous and Nonferrous
Materials

 Boilers
 Feed water heaters
 Air coolers
 Heat exchangers

The ultrasonic IRIS option is used to inspect a wide range of

materials, including ferrous, nonferrous, and nonmetallic
tubing. This technique detects and sizes wall loss resulting
from corrosion, erosion, wear, pitting, cracking, and baffle
cuts. Olympus digital IRIS inspection technology is used
extensively as a prove-up technique for remote field testing,
GQCCO Company Profile – Rev. 21 Dt. 09th Jan 2019 Page 17 of 34
magnetic flux leakage, and eddy current
inspections.

Tube Inspection with Remote Field Testing

(RFT)

 Boilers
 Feed water heaters
 Carbon steel heat exchangers

Remote field testing (RFT) is being used to successfully inspect ferromagnetic tubing such as carbon steel or ferritic
stainless steel. This technology offers good sensitivity when detecting and measuring volumetric defects resulting from
erosion, corrosion, wear, and baffle cuts.

Tube Inspection with Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL)

 Feed water heaters

 Air coolers
 Carbon steel heat exchangers

Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is a fast inspection technique, suitable for measuring wall loss and detecting sharp defects
such as pitting, grooving, and circumferential cracks. MFL is effective for aluminum-finned carbon steel tubes, because the
magnetic field is almost completely unaffected by the presence of such fins.

PAUT and TOFD Inspection

Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT)

Our fully code-compliant PAUT offering provides an alternative to on-site radiography. Developments in construction codes
allow PAUT to be used as a direct replacement for radiography on piping butt welds to ensure assets meet the quality
control requirements of ASME B31.3 and B31.1 and numerous European standards. PAUT can be applied when
GQCCO Company Profile – Rev. 21 Dt. 09th Jan 2019 Page 18 of 34
considering both workmanship and engineering critical assessment (ECA) acceptance criteria, with data being suitable for
accurate sizing and defect characterization.
Data Analysis
Sophisticated analysis software enables experienced operators to interrogate welds from multiple orientations including a
comprehensive evaluation of the weld root, fusion face, and weld toes.
Features:
 Identifies cracks, lack of fusion or penetration, porosity, and slag inclusions
 Radiation-free ultrasonic technique
 Rapid inspections with digital recording of data
Advantages:
 Welds from 0.84 inch in diameter up to flat plate may be inspected
 Wall thicknesses from 4 mm (Wall thickness below 4 mm may be possible using a go/no go strategy)
 Independent from site utilities due to battery operation and irrigation system
 Rapid inspections with digital recording of data
 Digitally-encoded scanning for accurate sizing
 Highly sensitive to fusion face flaws
 Free viewing software available to allow the client to review inspection data
 ASME and European code compliant

Considerations:
 Surface preparation is required to support the collection of quality data »
 100 mm of radial and axial clearance is required for scanner fitment (small bore scanner available for restricted
access scanning)

Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD)

Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) is an advanced ultrasonic inspection method that is used primarily for weld inspection. It
is a key method in crack detection and sizing for in-service vessel and piping welds.
TOFD capitalizes on tip diffracted signals generated when a discontinuity within a weld receives ultrasonic mechanical
energy. Tip diffracted signals are omni-directional wave fronts emitted from the very tips of discontinuities. This results in
detection that is less sensitive to defect orientation and more accurate for through wall sizing when compared with
amplitude reliant ultrasonic methods.
Given crack geometry can be erratic, TOFD is an excellent tool for detection and sizing.
Features:
 Suitable for circumferential and axial weld inspection
 Weld joint fitting is less critical with TOFD when compared to other ultrasonic methods
 Capable of inspecting complex geometry
Advantages
 Through wall measurements based on arrival times, therefore more accurate than amplitude techniques.
 100% coverage, permanent record, instant analysis, reproducible fingerprinting for condition monitoring.
 Reduced sensitivity to defect orientation, particularly applicable to cracks
 Capable of inspecting complex geometry including weld joints, such as bend to flange joints.
 High Temperature equipment can be used for temperatures up to 200°C
 Sensitivity / Theoretical Minimum Detectable flaw is ~0.5mm
 General Accuracy +/- 0.5mm
 Monitoring Accuracy +/- 0.3mm
Considerations:
 Near-surface, dead zone, however, computer processing can overcome this restriction
 Generally, minimum nominal wall thickness ~6mm
GQCCO Company Profile – Rev. 21 Dt. 09th Jan 2019 Page 19 of 34
 Material to be inspected must be penetrable by ultrasonic sound waves, specifically any coating must allow
ultrasonic coupling.
 Due to poor signal-to-noise ratios encountered during inspection of stainless steels, fine cracking, such as SCC
can be difficult to detect. This is strongly dependent on grade of material, and trials/validations can be carried
out to confirm suitability.
 The outer surface should be clean and free from loose impediments such as insulation or other debris. Debris
could cause the ultrasonic signal to scatter, therefore not reaching the inner surface. In this scenario, the signal
to noise ration may not be sufficient to allow credible data to be recorded. This is a prerequisite for all methods
of ultrasonic inspection.
 Complementary inspection techniques including phased array or manual ultrasonic testing can be carried out
for accurate flaw characterization.
Additional Features:
 100% encoded coverage of Weld & HAZ
 Digital storage of inspection data » Fully auditable inspections
 Supplementary TOFD for 100% fusion face coverage, where phased array is carried out from one side only on
pipe to fitting welds
 Various materials can be inspected, including stainless steels

6. General
a. The above scope of services offered serves as illustration only,
however, other services, methods or equipment can be provided
as required, these include inspection systems, pressure testing,
x-ray crawler units, metallurgical constancy, real time imaging,
fiber optics, acoustic emission, MFL Tank floor Inspection, Tube
Inspection, Positive Material Identification etc.,
