Day #4
1-Introduction to Building Information
Modeling-BIM

7- BIM IN DESIGN
• What is mean of BIM in Design?
• 3D BIM is the most familiar form BIM, is the process of gathering
graphical and non-graphical information to build 3D .

• Collaborating parties of a project must provide accurate inputs

of information so the flaws can be identified and corrected
before any construction or building work to avoid any rework.

• BIM allows multidisciplinary teams to work together more

effectively from a single source of truth.

1- 3D BIM Model
• Benefits of using 3D BIM :

1. Reduced the rework (less time and money spent on fixing the
errors in design stage before the construction takes place).

2. Improved collaboration between multidisciplinary teams.

3. 3D visualisation of the project to help the communication and take

a decision during the project.

4. Automatic & accurate appear of the Clash detection.

• Plan
• Section
• Elevation
• 3D
• Family
• Clash detection is a critical part of the integrated BIM modeling process.

2- Clash detection • BIM modeling involves creating a comprehensive master model that
includes design models from different disciplines of engineering design.

• Architects, Structural engineers, MEP engineers (HVAC, Electrical and

Plumbing), Environmental engineers and other professionals create design
models, independent from each other. Once all the models are integrated
into the BIM modeling process, clash detection comes into the picture.

• Clash detection process identifies where the independent models clash with
each other- finding where elements from one model overlap the elements of
models from other architect-engineering design disciplines.

• Clash detection ensures every aspect works together and nothing is

incompatible.

• Why using the clash detection?

1. Minimize the design errors and act as an early warning mechanism to

identify any potential problems and solve it.
2. Reduce the cost.
3. Save the time.
• Example: Project Intersections
•Virtual Reality help the client to see how a finished
project will look with realistic picture than a 3D
computer model.

•VR should be work in Design stage of the project that

mean any issues are spotted should be resolved as early
3- CAD Virtual Reality-VR as possible.

•VR have a benefits in achieve a better relationships with

the clients because it helps them to save time, cost and
improve stakeholder decision during a project’s life cycle.

8- BIM IN CONSTRUCTION
• 4D Building Information Modeling (4D BIM) is a process
to the intelligent linking of a 3D digital model with time
or schedule related information.

• 4D BIM-provides precise and useful construction project

information for teams.

• 4D BIM modeling visualization incorporates start and

• 4D BIM finish date data for the supply and installation of
construction components and reveals the importance of
them in relation to the overall project.

• This type of information is entered directly into the

model and can assist project planners in creating and
shaping proposals from a much earlier stage in the
project compared with traditional workflows.
• Timely data allows collaborators to visualize the progress of a project at different stages.

• This can positively impact the timeline of the project where the project planners are able to see how
assets come together sequentially and feedback any issues before the construction stage, creating
a safer working environment for site workers, and that can meet timelines and project deadlines.

• Benefits of using 4D BIM :

1. Conflict detection.
2. Compare planned vs. actual
3. Improve planning with detailed modeling.
4. Greater Collaboration.
5. Reduce Risk in Construction.
6. Improved Quality Outcomes.
7. Time Saving.
8. Cost Saving.
9. Increase performance quality.
10. Improved Health and Safety.
• Using the right software – such as Navisworks Simulate or Manage, linked to Microsoft Project
or Primavera. Then press play and see the model appear in sequence.

• You can include site logistics and see where there are conflicts – for example between the
construction activity, materials deliveries and access routes.

• You can press play and see the building appear in sequence – the same function allows you
to visualise where the build should be at any point in the project timeline. This feature is
useful for confirming your supply chain’s adherence to the construction programme.

• Models can be used for Site Inductions to allow people to familiarise themselves with the site,
safely before they attend.

• Using BIM in construction stage has a benefit of controlling and managing the risk.
• Overview of 3D Laser Scanning

• Scanning: capturing data

• Scan to BIM Services is a process of capturing scanned data from the real site conditions in the form of 3D
Model with the help of a scanner.

• It using for extract the accurate and precise construction information from as-built buildings.

• Use of laser scanner by contractors:

Contractors gather on-site information with the help of 3D Laser scanners of their project, which helps
them to get accurate data that can be further be used in all the construction and planning process.

• There are multiple uses of a laser scanner for the contractors:-

1. It helps to check the progress of a model.

2. It can generate accurate as-built models from existing buildings.
3. It can add any missing element or design to the model.
4. It works to inspect the as-builts model.
• How does Scan to BIM Work through 3D laser Scanners?

• The laser scanner is placed on a tripod, and

the laser rotates in very high speed and
captures the surrounding site.
• 5D BIM

• 5D BIM allows linking of the 3D model to

budget and costing heads in real-time which
simplifies budgeting, speeds up decision
making and make the BIM model more
accurate.

• 5D BIM is more than model-based

estimating. It's a new way of working with
the Owner and the project stakeholders,
bringing a wealth of information and
experience to the project in a visually
communicative way.
• Benefits of using 5D BIM :

1-Accurate Cost Estimation & Forecasting.

5D BIM implementation enables contractors to create

accurate cost estimates as the quantities of building
components are accurately identified from 3D models.
This helps project stakeholders to develop a reliable cost
estimate for the entire project, right from the beginning.
When the cost estimates are accurate, there are lesser
chances of risks and losses due to mismanagement and
miscommunications.

2. Faster Decision-Making Process.

3. Improved Collaboration Among Stakeholders.
4. Assistance in resource Procurement.
• What Is Mean of BIM in Field?
• BIM in the Field

• BIM tools for use in the field and project management

offer critical information to those in the field by
combining mobile technology on the project site with
cloud-based on the collaboration and reporting.

• BIM in the field:

1. Improve the quality control and reduce rework.

2. Track field performance with construction daily reports.

3. Enhance the Health and Safety management.

4. The software solution can be determining if any issues can be in the field.

5. The work tasks can be tracked, and progress monitored with checklists.

6. The real-time information can be used to communicate project status.

• Enhance the Health and Safety management:

1. Inspection templates should be created based on the health and safety requirements checklists and
the project risks which require monitoring and mitigating.

2. providing all the information in one place makes the safety reporting easier.

• The simple of access to the date information and the

ability to check the work and store that data in a central
location makes Commissioning & Handover easier

1. The tracking of equipment and assets from manufacture

to the site can be easier.

2. Asset information can be updated to date on computers or

iPad, in the real time.

3. Electronic data can be attached to assets, so the right

documentation is assigned to equipment.
• BIM tools in the field make the collaboration easier:

1. All relevant stakeholders have access to the project data online or offline.

2. With all the project information in one place, it is easier to schedule the work-task for team
members.

• provide the daily reporting :

1. Dashboards and custom reports can be created to monitor the key elements of a project as well
as for day-to-day information requirements.

• Having a centrally managing database of project

information is require with the right tools. The project
team should make sure they have the correct access &
permissions to project data.

• These permissions can be allocated by user, role or

company depending on what information is useful to
each .
• Government Soft Landings

• The Government Soft landings Policy sets out the

requirements and clear guidelines like:

1. Easy transition from Construction to Operation and

Maintenance.

2. End users / operators should be involved to represent the

client during design, construction and handover.

3. The transition from construction to operation stage must

be planned throughout the project and should be a smooth
process enabling optimum performance to be reached as
quickly as possible.

• The transition needs to consider the transfer of operational data as well as training,
commissioning, handover and aftercare.
