Summer Program Guide
Summer Program Guide
This guide will provide you with a starting point for finding a summer program, but you should always
spend time researching your own opportunities. As one college admissions counselor put it, “it is often in
the best interest of the students [to] create the unique opportunity for themselves…'general’ summer
programs [do not] add to applications of top students,” these students “need to seek out exceptional,
directed opportunities.” What that means is that by going ‘above and beyond’ and creating an opportunity
for yourself rather than just paying for a luxury trip to learn Italian in Italy shows initiative and a student
who seeks out ways to quench their love of learning.
Dr. Jeff Brenzel, prior Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Yale University, gave an interview in which
he commented on the importance of an applicant’s summer choices:
We encourage students to make use of their summers in the way they find most interesting. If they undertake a specific
program, it should be because it appeals strongly to them, not because they imagine it will look best on a resume. We also
honor and value summer jobs; for many students they are necessary and for others they can be just as important a learning
experience as anything else. What’s important to us is not what you chose to do for the summer, but what you got out of it.
Parents and students often ask us for the “number one summer program,” as if by attending this “magic”
program a student will be guaranteed Ivy League admission. It doesn’t work like that, as you can tell by
Dr. Brenzel’s quote above. The goal is to take your interests a step further during the summer and deepen
your academic theme or niche. Remain true to yourself, however, rather than selecting something you
think college admissions officers want to see. What they want to see is YOUR ongoing interest and action
in a particular area – how you’ve gone above and beyond.
We have selected the programs and opportunities listed in this guide based on our experience over the
past 20 years with students going to top colleges and Michele’s experience in the Dartmouth admissions
office. Things do change. Many schools such as Harvard, Yale, Cornell and Brown have added online
summer pre-college courses to allow students from anywhere to take part in classes. We share that info
here.
Remember, when you apply to college you will SHOW what you did during the summers by listing your
activities on the application – our students prepare an additional condensed Activity Sheet. You want to
select summer programs, classes, and opportunities according to YOUR focus so you have depth displayed
in your application.
Admissions committees read thousands of applications and in order for yours to stand out it helps to have
a “hook” or focused interest that runs through all of your materials (transcript, essays, activity sheet, and
recommendations). Summers are a great time to strengthen your “hook” or unique focus: talent, interest,
academic passion, etc. When an admissions officer reads your application the “hook” will jump off the
page and then be supported throughout the rest of your application. Again, this is an authentic interest of
yours and the goal is to find something this summer to deepen that interest. We’ve had students who have
focused on a particular author, for instance, and studied that author in depth through college level classes,
You have plenty of excellent programs to choose if you cannot afford an expensive internship or traveling
to another country. Bill Fitzsimmons, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Harvard University, noted
in an article that high-priced internships can be “wonderful experiences,” but “they will not give a student
an advantage in the admissions process because the playing field is not level.” Instead of traveling abroad
which has become commonplace, according to Gil Villanueva, Dean of Admissions at Brandeis University,
students should show that they have “a desire to contribute to society” by being active in his or her
community. Think of how you can become a “high impact” student this summer and truly it doesn’t mean
booking a flight to Africa to help the needy. Use your initiative and combine various local opportunities.
The programs we have listed are well thought of—they aren’t the mass mailing marketing ploys that try to
con you into plunking down lots of money because you are a “High Achiever.” Beware of those offers. They
have names that make you think you are being selected and are special, but check the depth of the
programming! They are similar, in our experience, to the Who’s Who among American High School
Students. They sound official and appear to be honoring you, but in actuality they are simply buying
names and throwing out a wide net of flattery in the hopes of selling something. The New York Times
covered this topic in an article called: Congratulations! You Are Nominated. It’s an Honor. (It’s a Sales
Pitch.)
So, dive into this guide and start your own page of brainstorming ideas. We have picked out the best of the
best available summer opportunities, but they are in no way the last word. Some of these programs are
quite competitive and require an application with essays and recommendations by early February. This is
a great prelude to writing your college essays. Ask one of your teachers if he/she would mind taking a look
at the essay before you send it in. These essays matter. Take the applications seriously and focus on your
academic interests. And, of course, the more competitive a program, the higher impact in admissions.
Many of our Top Tier Admissions students have forged their own rich summer opportunities by contacting
professors at local colleges or universities to offer their research skills, founded their own websites based
upon a personal passion, taught themselves a new language, or simply worked at their local Starbucks to
earn money for the school year while pursuing their scholarly interests locally. We’ve included information
in this guide on finding a job as well, which is always looked upon favorably by admissions officers—and
you will list this work experience on the Common Application. You can combine real work experience with
a college level class for a varied and rich summer and have a college transcript to send to colleges when
you apply.
Check the websites of all listed programs to receive updated information, such as program dates and
application cut-offs. These are ever-changing and you want to make sure you have the most recent
information.
All best,
P.S. We have created a 15-minute audio for you to go along with this guide and are including a bonus gift
of our 60-minute virtual workshop on creating a compelling summer. Do listen to both as we give you
additional ideas and suggestions.

Again, we encourage students who are interested in language to combine an academic program with one that is
purely conversational. Sure, it’s exciting to travel to France and speak French while eating delicious pastries
and living with a family, but the truth is, that’s an elite opportunity. Admissions officers would like to see
students who include an academic focus to their study of languages. So, take a college level class in French
Literature, for instance, or study linguistics.

The AMC 12 covers high school mathematics, and is for students in high school
who are under 19.5 years of age on the day of the contest. The AMC 10 covers
mathematics normally associated with grades 9 and 10 and is for students under
17.5 years of age on the day of the contest who are not enrolled in grades 11, 12 or
equivalent. Both contests are given in a convenient 75-minute interval, are 25
questions in length, with approximately 12 questions in common to both contests.
The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are administered in schools in February.

We can’t stress enough how important it is to take advantage of the many free online opportunities for
self-learning. You can literally take a course in almost any topic on your own time, at your own speed,
from the comfort of your own home. If you are from a small rural town, you can still taste the high
level learning available from top city universities. If you are a freshman bored in your US History
class, never fear there is so much more at your fingertips.
One of our students was interested in engineering and during his sophomore and junior years, took
three online engineering courses: Engineering Statics from the Carnegie Mellon Open Learning
Initiative as well as Engineering Management and Introduction to Civil Engineering Design from
MIT’s Open Course Program. He also got a job sweeping floors at an engineering firm and took AP
Physics his sophomore year. When he applied to the Pre College program at Carnegie Mellon after his
junior year, he was able to SHOW his self guided learning initiative and was accepted. He excelled at
the Introduction to Civil and Environmental Engineering course and went on to be accepted to
Carnegie Mellon early.
