Beating Heart Exploration

The heart is able to beat outside the body because the organ care system closely replicates the body's environment. It maintains a similar temperature and connects tubes to act as arteries and veins, allowing the heart to receive oxygenated blood and pump it out. This system allows the heart to function for up to 12 hours, much longer than the cold storage method where the heart is simply placed on ice to slow metabolism until transplantation. The conduction system that controls heart contractions originates with an electrical impulse generated in the sinoatrial node. It then travels through the atrioventricular node and bundle of His before activating the ventricles via Purkinje fibers. The parasympathetic nervous system slows the heart rate by releasing acetylcholine

1) How different is the Complete Care System from the Cold Storage method used to transport organs, such
as the heart, for transplantation?
The organ care system replicates human functions as closely as possible to keep the organs alive. In the
organ care system the time window is up to 12 hours, about triple that of the cold storage method. The
cold storage method is when the organ is placed on ice to slow the metabolic process in hopes to preserve
as many cells as possible before the organ reaches the location. The difference between these two processes is that the organ
care system is a replication of the organ in the body to keep the organ functioning where the cold storage method causes the
organ to freeze until it is placed inside the new human.
.
2) Why do you think the heart is able to beat when it is out of the chest?
The heart is able to beat when it is out of the chest and in the box because it is in a very similar environment with tubes that
connect and act as arteries and veins. Also, the temperature of the box is kept at the same temperature as our internal organs
are at in order for optimal function.

Explore 1: Cardiac Conduction

1. Observe the cardiac conduction and answer the following questions
What 3 parts of the heart have natural rhythms? How different are they?

The SA node, AV node, His-Purkinje network

The SA node depolarizes at a faster rate than the other parts. The AV node is the only connection between the atria and ventricles,
it receives the electrical impulse from the SA node. The His-Purkinje network receives the electrical impulses and brings them to
the ventricles, causing them to contract and force blood out.

Where does the signal to contract the heart originate from in a healthy conduction system?
The signal starts in the SA node and travels down your heart which triggered the electrical impulses in the AV node.

List components of the conduction system, starting with SA node and ending with cardiac cells of the ventricles:

SA node -- 2)AV node 3)AV bundles/branches 4)Apex 5)base of ventricles/Purkinje fibers 6)contraction begins

How long does it take for an impulse to reach each of the following locations?

SA node AV node AV bundle Apex Base of LV

90 ms 0.16 sec 50 ms 25 ms 100 ms

Match the cardiac events with the corresponding letters on ECG:

____Ventricular excitation (depolarization) QRS wave

____Atrial excitation (depolarization)P wave
____Ventricular repolarization T wave

How does the parasympathetic nervous system affect the heart’s rate in the SA node?
The parasympathetic nervous system affects the heart’s rate in the SA node by releasing hormones to decrease the
heart rate. The hormone that decreases the heart rate is acetylcholine.

How does the sympathetic nervous system affect the heart’s rate in the SA node?
The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for increasing the heart rate by releasing a hormone. This hormone that
accelerates heart rate is called norepinephrine which is produced during stress, exercise, and excitement.
