Here are the steps to find the center and radius of the circles given their equations: 1. 9x^2 + 9y^2 - 12x - 6y - 31 = 0 a) Transform into standard form: 9x^2 + 9y^2 - 12x - 6y = 31 b) Divide both sides by 9: x^2 + y^2 - 4/3x - 2/3y = 31/9 c) Complete the square: (x^2 - 4/3x + (4/9)) + (y^2 - 2/3y + (4/9)) = 31/9 d) Factor: (x - 2

Activity Title : Equation of a Circle
Learning Target : Determines the center and radius of a circle given its equation and vice versa.
Reference(s) : Math 10 LM, ADM Math, MELC
LAS Writer : Shiela Mae P. Tito

The center and the radius of a circle can be found given the equation by transforming it to its standard
equation ( x−h)2+ ( y−k )2= r 2 if the center of the circle is (h,k), or x 2 + y 2 = r 2 if the center of the circle
is the origin.
Example:
a. What is the center and the radius of the circle with equation x 2 + y 2 – 6x - 10y + 18 = 0?
Solution: Step 1: Transform the given equation into its standard form
x 2 + y 2 – 6x - 10y + 18 = 0 → x 2 - 6x + y 2 - 10y = -18
Step 2: Complete the square. Add to both sides of the equation the square of one-half the
coefficient of x and the square of one-half the coefficient of y.

1 1
(-6) = -3 ; −32 = 9 (-10) = -5 ; −52 =
2 2 → x 2 - 6x + 9 +

y 2 - 10y + 25 = -18 + 9 + 25
Step 3: Group and simplify the equation.
( x 2 - 6x + 9) +¿ - 10y + 25) = 16
Step 4: Factor and simplify the equation.
( x−3)2 + ( y−5)2 = 4 2
Thus, the center of the circle is at (3,5) and its radius is 4 units.

b. What is the center and the radius of the circle with equation 4 x2 + 4 y 2 +12 x−4 y−90=0?
Solution: Step 1: Transform the given equation into its standard form
4 x 2 +4 y 2 + 12x - 4y - 90 = 0 → 4 x 2 +4 y 2 + 12x - 4y = 90
4 x 2 +4 y 2+12 x−4 y 9 0
Step 2: Divide both sides of the equation by 4. → =

x 2 + y 2 + 3x - y =
4
Step 3: Complete the square.

Step 3: Group and simplify the equation.

( x 2 + 3x + ) +¿ - y + ) = 25

Step 4: Factor and simplify the equation.

( x + ) + ( y− ) = 52

Thus, the center of the circle is at ( , ) and its radius is 5 units.
