Assessment: Physical Attribute Layer 1 Layer 2

This document provides a template for assessing layers based on physical attributes across two layers. The template lists physical attributes down the left column and provides spaces to mark each attribute as productive (P) or unproductive (UP) for layers 1 and 2. Based on the number of P and UP marks, the assessor would mark the REMARKS column as SELECT or CULL. Other production parameters like age and body weight should also be considered when selecting or culling layers. Conducting this assessment allows identification of low producing hens to improve feed efficiency and space utilization.

▪ Write P if layer is productive and UP if layer is unproductive in the corresponding space provided for every physical attribute
that is being examined.
▪ For REMARKS, write SELECT or CULL as your verdict based on the number of P and NP that was earned by the layer during
the examination.

 Aside from physical characteristics, give some other production parameters that are needed in
selection and culling of layers? Explain briefly.

Age and bodyweight are some other production parameters that should observe in layers. The older the
hen, the more chance that it is nominated for culling. When it comes to body weight, the lower the weight of the
layers, there’s a chance that it will lead to unhealthy lays of eggs, because of the poor nutrients absorbs of
their body.

 Write a short conclusion for this activity.

By doing this activity, I’ve learned how to identify if the layer is for culling or selection. Where
you can easily determine by inspecting their physical characteristics as production parameters.
In addition to this, I also learned that it is essential to have adequate knowledge about this, to
remove low producing hens to have more feed and vacant space for productive birds. That is a
key factor to have more effective and efficient poultry production in order to have more profit
and gain.
