Lesson 4.3 - Translation

This document discusses transformations of quadratic relations. There are three main forms of quadratic relations: vertex form, standard form, and factored form. The focus is on vertex form (y=a(x-h)2+k). The parent graph is y=x2, which can be transformed through translations (vertical k or horizontal h) or stretches/compressions (vertical a) to create new graphs. Horizontal translations move the graph left or right by h units, vertical translations move the graph up or down by k units. Together these transformations allow quadratic relations to be manipulated from the parent graph.

MPM2D Lesson 4.

Transforming Quadratic Relations

Overview:
There are various forms of quadratic relations which include:

2
1. ___________________________ y=a( x−h ) +k

2. ___________________________ y=ax 2 +bx+c (we will learn more about this form later)

3. ___________________________ y=a( x−s)( x−t ) (we will learn more about this form
later)

In this unit we will take a close look at each form and the key information it gives you. First, our

focus will be on ______________________________________ . In order to truly understand each

form, you must first understand the _________________ _____________________. It is the parent

graph that gets manipulated (or ______________________________) to produce a new graph.

PARENT GRAPH FOR A QUADRATIC y  x2

KEY POINTS
Direction of Opening _______________________

Vertex _______________________

Optimal Value: max/min @ ____________

Axis of Symmetry _______________________

y-intercept _______________________

x-intercept(s) _______________________

This parent graph can now be ________________________ into a new graph by one of the following
transformations:

1. Vertical Translation (k)

2. Horizontal Translation (h) SO.....
3. Vertical Stretch/Compression (a)
4. Reflection (sign on a) “transforms”
y=x 2
2
y=a( x−h ) +k
MPM2D Lesson 4.3

Let’s investigate each transformation individually….

2
1. Vertical Translation (k) y=x +k

Using an online graphing software (www.desmos.com/calculator), type in the general formula

and add a slider for the parameter k. For each of the following equation, change the k value on
the slider and graph each of the following relation on the grid provided.

a) y  x2  4 b) y  x2  3 c) y  x2 1

Describe the type of transformation you observed. List and describe the key features of the
original graph that were changed by the transformation.

2
Conclusion: If y=x +k , the relation has been vertically translated:
 k units __________, if k >0 or
 k units __________, if k <0

2. Horizontal Translation (h) y=( x−h )
Using an online graphing software (www.desmos.com/calculator), type in the general formula
and add a slider for the parameter h. For each of the following equation, change the h value on
the slider and graph each of the following relation on the grid provided.
y   x  3 y   x  1 y   x  4

a) b) c)

graph that were changed by the transformation.

2
Conclusion: If y=( x−h ) , the relation has been horizontally translated:
 h units __________, if h>0 or
 h units __________, if h<0

2
For example: y=( x−3 ) −6
