Assignment no. 1, Spring 2021
Class: BEE-6C Date: 23rd February 2021
Subject: Power Distribution and Utilization (EEE-375) Deadline: 2nd March 2021
Instructor: Fahd Ali Shifa Marks: 50

Instructions:
1. Academic honesty is a must. Copied assignments will receive ZERO marks.
2. Keep the answers to comprehensive questions short and clear giving all the RELEVANT details. All
the diagrams must also be neat and clear.
3. This is a group assignment with a MAXIMUM OF THREE students allowed per group.
4. All submissions must reach me by noon (12:00 PM PST) on the date mentioned as the deadline
either via your CU Online Portals or on-campus in my office.
Q1. Answer the following questions (all questions carry equal marks). CLO1 [C2-PLO1]
1) Explain the structure of electric supply system of Pakistan by giving its block diagram.
Refer to slide no. 3 of ‘[Week1Lect2-3] Introduction.pdf’ in ‘PDF Handouts’ folder of the
shared OneDrive link.
2) Distinguish between a feeder and a lateral. Also give an appropriate conceptual diagram
to express your concepts. Note: This is a conceptual diagram so do not copy it from my
handouts or from online sources. Express your concepts in the form of a diagram.
3) Explain what is meant by flexibility of an overhead or underground distribution system.
4) Explain how is it that the maintenance cost of an underground distribution system is less
than that in an overhead distribution system even though the fault location and repairs are
comparatively much difficult in underground system than in overhead system.
5) Express, in your own words, the difference between availability (of power on demand) and
reliability of a distribution system.
6) Explain the difference between a recloser and a circuit breaker.
7) Explain how discrimination will degrade if two 60-A and 65-A fuses are connected in
series to protect parts of a power system instead of 60-A and 100-A fuses. Use fuse
characteristics to express your point of view.
8) Discuss how operating time of a relay is set using time setting multiplier (TSM) dial and
its time/PSM curve. Give numerical example to express your point of view.
9) Explain how cooling of arc in high-resistance methods and blast effect in low-resistance
methods helps to extinguish the arc formed by separation of electrodes in a circuit breaker.
10) Explain why restriking voltage/transient recovery voltage (TRV) is produced when arc
between electrodes of circuit breaker is extinguished? Also, discuss how this voltage is
prevented from restriking the arc.
