PBL Mental Health questions

1. What are typically the most common causes of stress in students?
The most notorious causes are exams, the accumulation of activities or
tasks, in many cases teachers assign a lot of work and that makes the
student feel in an environment of tension and stress.
Other factors are family problems or financial problems and all the time
the student thinks about how to contribute money to improve the situation
at home, for this reason the student keeps stress at school or university
and at home.

2. What are the most common mental health problems suffered by

people in the educational community?

Many college students report that mental health difficulties interfere with
their studies. In the 2015 (two thousand fifteen) American College Health
Association survey, college students identified the following mental
health issues that negatively impacted their academic performance in the
last 12 months:

Stress (30% of students)

Anxiety (22%)

Difficulties sleeping (20%)

Depression (14%)

I think this information is very true, I say it from my experience, I have felt
stress, anxiety, depression and all this does not let me sleep well and it
fills me with despair, I have no peace of mind.

3. What are the signs and symptoms to recognize mental health

problems in the classmates and teachers around you?

The most noticeable symptoms to recognize in people who have mental

health problems are the following:

• Feeling sad or depressed

• Confused thinking or reduced ability to concentrate

• Excessive fears or worries or extreme feelings of guilt

• Extreme mood changes of highs and lows

• Withdrawal from friends and activities

• Significant tiredness, little energy.

• Inability to cope with daily problems or stress.

• Trouble understanding and relating to situations and to people

• Problems with alcohol or drug use

• Major changes in eating habits

• Excessive anger, hostility, or violence

• Suicidal thinking

4. How do you think you can do as a future teacher to help your pupils
manage the pressures of life and society?

I think it is very important to present students with realistic situations, tell

them about the problems that society faces, speak to them truthfully, talk
with them about what they will face in the future so that they are prepared
physically, mentally and emotionally, in addition to telling them that all
people have problems in life, but the key to everything is to stay strong
and look for solutions to problems, to overcome obstacles.

And that the most important thing is to look for the positive side of
problems and smile.

I think I would dedicate classes to talk about these topics and if some of
my students have mental health issues, the best thing I would do is listen
to them and give them support and confidence.

5. Do you think our universities and schools are ready to confront and
deal with mental health problems suffered by teachers and
students?

In my opinion, I believe that universities and colleges are not yet

prepared, since sometimes the only thing that matters to them is finishing
the school year and the semester, it is only necessary and important to
work and study, in such a way that the subject of mental health takes a
back seat.
In some educational institutions there is still ignorance on mental health,
since some students and teachers consider that a teenager who
expresses depression or anxiety is being exaggerated and just wants to
get attention.
